Hello,

I had a 'phone call last night from the lady who accompanied me for my singing exam yesterday. Apparently she is a member of our local Amateur Dramatics Society, and after hearing me sing, wondered if I would like to go along and audition for their next production!! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/unsure.gif) They are not sure what it will be at this minute, but it could be 'Oliver'! I am thrilled, not to mention stunned, that she asked me, but is it too soon?

I still have a lot to learn with breathing and voice projection etc. What do you think? Have any of you any experiences of Am. Dram. Societies?

Thanks x

I was drafted in to sing Mabel into an amateur performance of the Pirates of Penzance. I did it gratis as with the exception of the Mezzo they drafted in as Fredericks mother everyone else was doing for nothing, and I wanted to do it.

It was terrific fun. Oh DC go for it, I really enjoyed the experience. My husband (then boyfriend) and my Vicar sang in the Chorus and there were other people I knew in the cast too.

Oliver is a great show, lots of opportunities to sing, dance and act.

Don't let this opportunity slip away. Sure there's occasionally petty biccering, but if its a well run company, you should have a blast.

I'm a huge fan of Am-Op&Dram. I've been doing it for over 20 years and have had a real ball!
You get to dress up in all sorts of wierd/wonderful/beautiful outfits.
You get to experiment acting out characters that may be close to or miles away from your own personality.
It is always tremendously rewarding to do something that involves real teamwork - which is what all Am-Dram produtions are.
For me it had an extra bonus side effect that I became a confident public speaker - I reckon it's better than any number of presentational skills courses.
You can also have a gentle route into playing solos; if you don't feel confident or experienced enough at the beginning, you can start in the chorus (which is itself great fun), progress to small parts, then the lead at a pace that suits you...

Thank you both. I'm getting more tempted to ring and say I'll have a go! My only concern is the amount of time it will take out of the week. I work full time and teach most evenings etc. etc. I'm afraid to start something that I won't be able to commit to. I guess that's something to ask when I 'phone the lady.

Thanks again x

This is something you need to think about.
I think that our local amateurs have a whole week of rehearsal the week before the performance then there is the performance week.

I've also heard about some of the costumes but maybe you won't want to know.... (IMG:style_emoticons/default/blink.gif)

I sing regularly in [my town] light operatic society, which has recently been renamed as [my town] musical theatre society... we are doing Oliver next too we think!

It's really great fun, honestly, such a nice atmosphere... and with people at all stages of their singing experience - if you don't feel ready to play Nancy, why not go for a smaller part, or some chorus experience... the main thing is to have fun (clichéd I know, but it's true) and it really is a lot of fun, at least at mine. Everyone gets on really well etc.

My experiences of amdrams go back to late 60s - we should start a thread on the more repeatable exploits of some societies

Re costume - after a while I used to hire mine for principal roles - expensive but worth it
Re Wigs - never wore them - just used to grow my hair - it looks like an ugly and ill fitting wig anyway to quote one review

Re flea bites it gives a whole new meaning to "Make lots of new friends " and " We are just itching to perform for you"

Let's start a thread!

The ones that I have been involved with over the years seem to have been quite full of ladies of well over fifty who seem to think that they can still get away with singing leading roles, playing girls of twenty-one. And they don't look good in shorts either. ( thinking back to a visit to a particularly memerable performance of South Pacific!)

But do go for it Daisy. You could have a lot of fun if you ignore the big fish in smal pond members.

Helloo,
I've been part of am amateur dramatics group for nearly eight years! It really is fun and gives you a chance to experiment with your voice and act as well.
They are usually so friendly and you make lots of friends.
It will help with your breathing and your voice projection, as you have to try and fill a hall when you are singing, it also gives you a great buzz and i think you will find your voice will improve greatly!
Whatever you decide, good luck with your singing!

Thank you!

I had forgotten this thread! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/duh.gif) (IMG:style_emoticons/default/blush.gif)

I forgot to say I will be going along next week for a sing through, and a chat with the director. I won't commit until I know how much time is involved. I am looking forward to it though! And yes, they have decided on Oliver!
