I have grade 7 recorder and believe me, it is not easy. Dynamics are allmost impossible without going out of tune.

I wouldn't imagine it's ever easy to play an instrument if you really want to be good at it (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

recorder - easy to learn, difficult to master. same with most things, but for a beginner the simpler fingerings without having millions of keys to worry about makes it seem easier. but every instrument has its difficulties, just the recorders' are found in the higher grades.

Sure, just put it in your signature (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif).

Oh, and hello; I don't think you've been formally welcomed to the boards yet (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif). What pieces are you working on on recorder at the moment?

It is not easy. For one, you regular get the same pieces for grade 8 recorder as grade 6 flute (Telemann D minor for one). I also saw somewhere else the more complicated an instrument looks (flute, clarinet), the easier it is fingerwise.

Fingerings only seem simpler in the home key, and maybe one flat or sharp either side...after that there are forked fingerings to cope with, and half holes, and as soon as you go up the octave you get pinched thumbhole, then really odd fingerings beyond the second octave. Ah, but it's fun, that's the thing. Well done for your grade 7. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

Very true Neil. All those keys on other woodwind instruments help considerably. There are far more awkward fingerings on the recorder than there are for any of the other woodwinds. It's a tough instrument to master.....

Recorder certainly isnt the easiest instruments to play. In fac i would say its one of the hardest to accomplish, particularly cos of all the baggage is carries... such as the rubbish squeaky aulos recorders found in primary schools... people always associate that with the recorder but don't have any idea about the beautiful repertoire there is for it: Handel' sonatas, Telemann' concertos and suites etc.

If one of those was put in front of you, i'm sure you would change your mind.

Not to mention it's VERY difficult to get a good technique due to lack of keys and make a decent sound

Yeah it is difficult to get it good. I play in a recorder ensemble and although I'm quite good technique wise my tone and dynamics are awful becuase I've only really been playing about 18 months.
Musicbaby, I'm assuming you play treble if you're doing grade 7?? I only play descant and tenor because I don't have time to learn a new set of fingering for treble. Oh and my mum has a bass recorder which is only plastic but still sounds lovely.
