Thoughts with you. They give us so much happiness but it's so sad that they don't last forever.

Lots of love and hugs coming your way Bagpuss. I lost my own fur baby earlier this week. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sad.gif) You haven't 'murdered your cat' - sometimes we have to do these things, to ease their suffering. It is hard to deal with, but deep down you know you wouldn't have made the decision had it been the wrong thing to do. xxx

I've never, ever, felt that it was anything but the right thing to do for my gorgeous Jake, who was put to sleep 13 years ago. If anything, I apologised to him for leaving it just a bit too long, because I didn't want to be without him, though he was so ill. You have done the right thing (IMG:style_emoticons/default/thereThere.gif)

Just wondering if you have read Ben Fogle's moving writings on having to say goodbye to his beloved 12 year old labrador, Inca? Such a hard decision - but most people live longer than most pets. Sad fact.

HelenVJ - yes I have. At least his dad put Inca to sleep not some impersonal vet whose bedside manner left rather a lot to be desired. Spoke to pet undertaker today though who was wonderful - personal and compassionate.

I'm not going to bore you all with it all - it's a long story as to why Felix Simmons was not just any old cat.

Sincere thanks to all of your kind comments here not to mention the full PM Bagbox of truly uplifting kindness.

Bagpuss, I am sorry your vet was not more sensitive. However, It was not murder. It was the last act of love. That is the way you must think of it. Another hug (IMG:style_emoticons/default/grouphug.gif)

No you haven't! You've prevented him from suffering needlessly.

Having lost 2 dogs I know exactly how you feel, so much harder when it's a special pet.

So very sorry to hear your sad news. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sad.gif) Although we have never yet had to have a cat put to sleep, we have lost more than one in the past to road accidents, and the pain, the sense of loss and the grief are huge.

It will take time to come to terms with your bereavement, but I hope that, when the time is right, you will be able to take comfort in giving a home to a new cat (or cats) in need of one. A new cat won't take the place of the special one you have lost - but as a cat lover myself, I can't imagine being without a cat for any length of time, and each one becomes special in his/her own way.

Brought my beloved boy "home" today. I put most of the ashes under the plant trough at the cemetery up the road where his original owner is buried. It was right to take him there.

I have a little memorial at home in the form of a beautiful agapanthus that my cleaning lady gave me in his memory - she used to share a sandwich with him every week. Bless.

I can honestly say I have never felt grief like this over a cat before. Sincere thanks to those of you who have lovingly clogged up my PM Bagbox with kind messages (inevitably I also received an "it's only a cat" message - cheers for that).

Might go and stay with Alpha Male Jazz Cat for a couple of days after teaching tomorrow just to get some sea air and away from the place where I live that no longer feels like home.

Thanks to you all again - I'm genuinely touched.

Bags x
