I had my 2nd lesson today and I'm still really excited!! My teacher asked me to buy a scale book for next week. I thought it was kinda soon, but maybe I'm wrong... I forgot in my piano days how soon I started to do the scales, but probably alot later than 2nd/3rd lesson.

When did you start learning the scales?

I think the G major scale was the first thing I did learn (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wacko.gif) Even before any tunes.

I think you're coming to the violin with other musical experience?

If so, scales early on are a really good way for you to understand the geography of the fingerboard.

Also great for focusing on tone, technique, posture!

I started learning the violin when I was 8 or 9 and played for a year or so on and off but in all that time probably only had a dozen 15 minute lessons at the most and never even progressed to 4th finger.
I class myself as having started learning last September when I took up the violin again aged 35. When I went for my first lesson I expected my teacher to take me right back to first principles again but was started on shifting exercises! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wacko.gif)

Thankfully I've about drawn breath again now and am working towards doing grade 4 this summer.

I really enjoy scales, if you put in concerted work on scales they give big improvements in all your playing.

Scales are great! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)

Hahaha... I never did any scales until around grade 3-ish when my teacher made me play all those in the ABRSM scale book. And I wasn't even sitting for exams! That lasted for a couple of months until I stopped taking lessons from her. Now I never touch scales unless there's an exam.

G major scale was the first thing my violin teacher asked me to play in my first lesson (IMG:style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif) 2 octaves too! lol
Since then... ummm, it was a few months before i really started to get my scales sorted and learn them all (well all the ones i need for my exam which is only... 25ish or so?)

I love scales on flute, but, well, they're alright on violin. Only alright (IMG:style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif)

Yes, I've played piano till G7. I hated scales when I played the piano (lowest scores of all sections, pretty pathetic), but I'm actually a bit excited to get to start scales so soon!

She had me play 2 variations of the twinkle, and then had me sight read the 2nd song in Suzuki, and wanted me to start on the third song. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

SAME!! I can just feel where my fingers need to be so much easier on flute.

I haven't done any scales since I did my grade 2, three years ago. Now I'm aiming for grade 5 this term so need to get a move on. I hate G minor 3 octaves!!

I learnt did 2 octaves of the C major scale in my first cello lesson. I already played piano, but this was tough! I also had to compose a piece for open strings for the second lesson.

Started learning scales when i started learning scales and pieces for grade 1.
I didn't know what scales are for approximately 6 months after beginning piano lessons.
But my father teaches me the violin (no exams though, maybe after I finish Grade 8 piano), and he insists on scales every single "lesson" (IMG:style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif) from the very first one.

I'm a guitarist, so this might not apply to you
but
I started doing scales on my 2nd lesson
before I knew that notes went from A to G, I was doing G-Major in all modes
it was as you could imagine rather confusing at first but it has helped me inexplicably in these past 2 years (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)
hope this helps =)

I LOVE SCALES I LOVE SCALES I LOVE SCALES, did I tell you that I LOVE SCALES??? (IMG:style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif) (IMG:style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif) (IMG:style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif)
Started learning piano with scales (that was the first thing I learnt), then a month later started violin and I learnt my scales within a month of starting violin (on my own accord, teacher did not prompt me to do it).
I guess I waited 3 weeks or so on the violin as I wanted to learn where 'my fingers went' before I did anything and anyway, my first lesson was spent on open strings and I only had lessons once a fortnight so I started scales after my second lesson (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

As you all know, I only did it for two years, but I think I learned a couple of scales within the first year/
But then again, my teacher wasn't really qualified.. which is why she got sacked ;]
