I believe there is an example of this in Bach's Brandenburg Concerto 1 (or 2?). It apparently sounds a third higher than the violin.

ahh but Paganini wrote works for violin deliberately tuned up a minor 3rd....ahhh

A three-manual piano accordian! Three times the noise, arrgh!

Or the piccolo equivalent of the oboe - a sopranino oboe? That might be a bit piercing.

I think a treble french horn would be bad, with yet another side with another thumb trigger and yet another set of confusing set of fingerings to learn and specific places when you should use them!

The instrument that's pitched a third above a normal violin in that Brandenburg Concerto is called a "Violino Piccolo" in my score :D

And, the soprano oboe is called a Musette!
