Personally, I haven't got an embarrassing experience yet (IMG:style_emoticons/default/unsure.gif) (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wacko.gif)
But I would love to share my mum's! She went to a private school and the students had to perform a peice on an instrument to entertain the teachers and parents. My mum tried every instrument and failed but eventually stuck with the guitar. She walked on, Played her 'piece' Starting beaming like an idiot when she'd finished (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) Waited..... Waited......... (IMG:style_emoticons/default/ph34r.gif) No Applause. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/blink.gif) The parents and teachers thought that she was tuning up (IMG:style_emoticons/default/blush.gif) |

One year in youth orchestra I was sitting front of second violins and our somewhat flamboyant conductor frequently knocked our music off. My desk partner and I both tended to memorise stuff readily (and that particular group's music got somewhat over-rehearsed) - so usually we'd wait for a break to pick the music up ...
Sometimes people think I'm doing the same nowadays if a page turn goes wrong - but actually I'm slightly long-sighted and just switch to reading from the next stand forward... I remember another embarrassing moment - my sister and I used to busk quite often, mostly playing together then solos to have a break. I'd just learnt Vitali Chaconne - but very much still polishing it - and decided to give it a go. A little way in I noticed a teacher watching me (we did Suzuki, it wasn't my own teacher but nevertheless one I knew very well). I was shaking inside hoping I'd make it to the end without mishap! One of the worst for "embarrassment" was not quite so bad because it was shared. Youth orchestra again, but the senior group. We were doing a broadcast concert with a notoriously temperamental piano soloist. One of the works was by one of the minimalist composers, I forget who. Since audience noise was likely to interfere with the broadcast quality, we set out to pre-record that piece. Shouts and glares and complaints from the soloist at every tiny accidental noise soon had us all so uptight that we could barely play when we were actually supposed to. |
