JoJo - I can see what you mean though about it not fitting on a stand. Did you get yours rebound? Was that expensive if you dont mind me asking. Thanks

no, I haven't so don't know how much it would be, but I have heard from some people that they've done that themselves at home, with some cheap 'home tool' that you can buy in office supply wholesale type of place, but I've never looked into it so could not say anything more specific (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sad.gif)

In the 'Basics' book, he has a whole chapter on holds, and I could see that my thumb needed to move about a cm to the right of my middle finger. I've tried this in practice today, and the tension is released and my 'pinky' sits so much better on top of the bow!

Voila! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/party1.gif)

Time will tell if this improves my pain.

this is fantastic!!!
and yes, this book will last you a long time, the whole of your violin learning/playing career (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wink.gif) (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

Its amazing how precise playing can be, who would think that moving a cm could make such a difference to the tension in your hand. All it needs is good clear instruction to prevent injuries. I was getting really concerned that if I didnt find a solution soon I could do some permanant injury, its been so painful at times I have had to apply deep heat and support with tubigrip! not good eh?

Oh this is good timing because I've been wondering what to do about my "wretched" bowing. My teacher has made a correction but I think there is more that needs to improve. I'm going through Todd Ehles videos at the moment but this book sounds like just the thing! Thank you (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

I've just bought a selection of music today, and downloaded more from the web... whats one more book, especially one this good ??? (IMG:style_emoticons/default/tongue.gif)

(IMG:style_emoticons/default/agree.gif) you can't have too many music/violin books and sheet music (IMG:style_emoticons/default/muahaha.gif)

Is there a viola version??

I get books rebound at Leeds University print services. £2.99 for up to A4 size. I suppose any print/copying shop will be able to do it for you. The service I get is pretty simple, they just chop the spine off and put wire binding on. Don't settle for comb binding though, get wire bound. Comb-binding won't stand up to regular use, esp. on a thick book.

I think this book is the best one I've invested in, I'm surprised it is not more widely known. Professor V's videos are really good, but I have to say even his version of holding the bow didnt help my pain. Been practising for 45mins this morning and no pain! YAY

I dont think there is a viola version but as its lots of technique I dont see why you couldn't just imagine the clef as Alto instead of Treble. There are lots of photos in the book with good instruction.

I'd forgotton about Leeds uni print services, this is a thick book though, when I was there I used to get my essays/disertation bound by them, but they were not as thick!! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif)

It's helpful to know this. Can you give me any contact details? I'd like to get my copy rebound, but I don't think they do it out here in the wilds.

I don't know if they'd do things by post.... (IMG:style_emoticons/default/huh.gif)

You could try searching 'media services' on the www.leeds.ac.uk website and see if that yields and phone numbers or something like that. I'm in the Far East just now and can't help!! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wacko.gif)

Thanks, Elisabeth. I couldn't find anything there, but Keele University in Staffordshire say they can wire-bind it for about a tenner. Does anyone know if that is good value for this kind of thing?

Edit: They did say the margins need to be not less than 1.5 cm, so it's only just wide enough. Has anyone had a problem with this? (IMG:style_emoticons/default/blink.gif)

I'm just wondering if any of the scales books may be any good, ones like 'improve your scales' or 'fiddle time scales' (I know the latter is aimed at a younger audience but I really dont mind).

I have the viola one and I find it very useful. I also have the plain old AB scale book (Grades 1-5), but I find I get a lot more mileage out of the Viola Time Scales book. The little pieces it uses to help get you 'into' that key are great too. I really like that book and am hoping for a book 2 (as I think there is a fiddle scales 2) in the near future. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

I bought the fiddle time scales book, and I agree, I like it, I like how they have put the exercises and the tunes together with the scale. I think I will get some milage from this book, thank you for the recommendation. Sometimes the simple ones are the best. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif)
