Sight reading my parts to played at Scottish Chamber Orchestra's Wind Farm weekend.
My clarinet definitely needs a service, getting clarion F out is difficult. I changed the cork on the link but didn't do a good job! And throat A and G# pads definitely needs changing. After an hour, they get soaked and begin to leak air and chalumeau register sounds like clarion register (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sad.gif) Not sure if I should take my old Jupiter with me instead (IMG:style_emoticons/default/dry.gif) |

Otherwise, I am just dipping my toes in Grade 7 pieces. Me too, but flute, not clarinet. Scales are underway, and I'm pencilling in the Bach E minor slow movement for List A, the Taffanel Allegro for List B, and possibly the Gariboldi study in Bb for List C. Like you, I'm not planning to take the exam for a good while yet, and possibly not ever! I'm always a wreck in exams, and in my Grade 6 the examiner said something that made me feel hassled and rushed, and I'm not keen to repeat the experience. The other reason why I'm in no hurry is the aural tests, because I CANNOT sing/play back the lower part of a two-part phrase; I have spent all my life singing the first soprano part in choirs, and playing treble instruments (except for piano) and my brain just can't hear where the lower part is moving to. Does that sound weird? (IMG:style_emoticons/default/blink.gif) But since I've only been back at work for a couple of weeks, we're actually revisiting some earlier pieces for a while; I need to build up some stamina again! Re the aurals - you more or less described me... I found playing 3rd/4th (and Alto) in a flute choir helped quite a lot - and picking a line and listening for it when listening to choral stuff. Got there in the end for G8, apart from I ended up running out of notes at the bottom of my range when singing back! |

Surely they wouldn't penalise you for your range not going low enough though? |

It threw me a little - so the pitching was off. When practicing my accompanist transposed stuff up the octave so the bottom line was in my range. Didn't get penalised particularly - Modulations/IDing chords was my disaster area!

Tonight I have my next lesson. One piece, dance of the clowns, is rather tricky to play. So I hope it goes well. Sunday I had my play date with a pianist. We're still busy with the lord of the rings. It getting better each practise. Since three weeks I try to play flute. I've got a secondhand prelude. Probably not the best but it serves it purpose. It took me a week and a half to get sound out of it. Yesterday I managed to play some funclub stuff. I also bought another treble recorder, a Mollenhauer with a much better sound than my Aura. Only it has no double holes. But I haven't got the time to learn to play treble properly yet.

Had a great practice today, had a long go at the Taffanel Andante Pastoral et Scherzettino to try and get the scherzettino more even and up to speed, started looking at all three movements of the Hindemith Sonata and played through the 3rd movement of the Mozart G major Concerto.
Also ordered the music for Devienne Concerto 7 in E minor, I can't wait to play it. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wub.gif) I'd only played studies by Devienne before, I wish I'd found out how incredible his concertos are sooner! |

For the end of term playnight there will be no theme. So I can choose my own piece. I need someting I can learn to play well in 6 weeks. I found some short pieces in my barok/renaissance book, some adapted version of Bach and Handel, but I'm not sure about them yet. I should like to play He's a pirate from Pirates from the Caribean but I doubt my classic orientated teacher will agree with that.

Enjoy the Devienne, Sonatine, I really like him too (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)
I've just started working on Dave Heath's 'Out of the Cool' and the Chopin Variations - very different but like them both a lot! |

Revived my most favorite book "The Flute Player's Companion" for exercise of particular counting problems. I feel like a rookie.
Loads of scale practice. My poor neighbors. They have to endure that each day now for 20 to 30 minutes. Ouch! And not just whole scales but sometime just the finger movement for 3 or 4 notes. I hope I don't get kicked out of the house! |
