I am doing Grade 4 clarinet.
In D minor scale which upper B flat do people use? I find Bb to C# awkward when legato so I wonder if I should use side key version rather than the long one? Also, when putting a clarinet together, is it OK to have the reed slightly out of alignment* with the register key or is the assembly sacrosanct? [*I mean the barrel is rotated by a degree or three.] Obviously a child would be taught to do it properly but, at 53, I am not as supple as I was and I find it can help me hold the thing more easily! |

Quick response as I'm dashing out to teach. Use whichever Bb works best for you and no the reed doesn't need to be in line. I play with it rotated and always have done. |

'Banana key' Bb is probably going to be awkward, otherwise anything goes (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

And only slightly (IMG:style_emoticons/default/offTopic.gif) After playing a rather exposed 8 beat long throat Bb yesteday I was asked 'What fingering are you using for that Bb?' The answer was 'The other one'.......oops!

Pardon my ignorance, I'm sure it is obvious but which is the banana key? (and yes I use the side Bb for D minor, I think it is just practice and keeping the support going to retain a nice legato). Always disliked the D scales.

Thanks for the replies guys and gals. There is another c# fingering- overblown F#, either F with two side keys or normal F#. Both work better on bass clarinet though! |
