I need to replace my passport as it's nearly expired... But now I seem to have lost it. It's the same price to replace a lost passport as to get a new one but if I try to replace my lost passport, will they replace it with a duplicate which has also nearly expired? Or will they replace it with a new one which will be valid for the next ten years? Basically, will I have to pay twice, does anyone know?
I'd really appreciate any information! Also, does anyone know how long they take to be replaced if you don't fast track it? |

I got my first passport a couple of years ago, so have never had to replace one. I *think* that if they replace a lost passport then they basically do it as a new one, but I'm not sure. Have you looked on their website? It will probably say on there.
http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/TravelAndTrans...ports/DG_174163 If you need it in a hurry then you may need to come here to get it done at the passport office. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) |

(if not why would it be same price to renew or get a replacement??) |

I don't know, I couldn't find it on the website, but it probably is there somewhere, I'll have to have a closer look. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) I'm not in a giant hurry as I don't think I'm going anywhere til June, but people have told me of horror stories like waiting months and months for theirs... So I'm just double checking.
I'm sure it'll be fine. |

I need to replace mine, too. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sad.gif) It's expired, and I don't have my full A4 birth certificate and I need it for a job offer. *sigh*

(IMG:style_emoticons/default/unsure.gif) You might find that they are able to accept your driving licence, NHS card and National Insurance card. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) |

Lucky, if you are going somewhere in June I'd get a new one promptly as they can get rather slow by post sometimes , particularly in early summer. Then if it doesn't arrive you may have to queue up in Liverpool or wherever your nearest office is.

Last year I had to renew my passport and, like you, couldn't find the old one! I seem to remember that it was pretty quick, though - and I think it ran from when I sent in the form. I think you'll have to speak to them to be certain, though..

Last time I had my boys' passports renewed they were back within a fortnight of posting them. Best not to delay though in case they hit a busy patch.

My son lost his and I was so cheesed off with the thought of having to get his photo signed that I made a huge effort and found the old one, safely tucked away in a passport application envelope so it would be there when I got round to filling it in (notice it's me filling it in, even though said son is 21!). The only trouble was I had about ten application packs so I had missed it. It might be worth a last ditch look too.
