I bought music as well. Dowland songs for voice and viol consort (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wub.gif) , seasonal (wintry) songs for a combination of voices and viols, and some viol duets. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) Anything countertenor-y amongst that lot? (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) Depends how high you want to go. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/tongue.gif) (IMG:style_emoticons/default/tongue.gif) step-ladder stuff then (IMG:style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif) |

Twas great fun! I arrived, then Barry found me, then we saw Bag, then we saw andante_in_c and then katyjay appeared. And we thought we figured out who RoseRodent was but we didn't say hello at the time and said we would brave the attempt later, which was very silly as of course RoseRodent couldn't be found later!
Baz and I listened to the Mollenhauer maker's demonstration recital. I now need a Mollenhauer modern treble with E foot, for the playing of Bach cello suites (because [1] they sometimes go down to an E; and [2] it had lovely strong low notes which is very good if you are playing things like the cello suites where you effectively have to play your own bass line) I bought music. And little silver recorder earrings. And no instruments at all this time! Oh, and Baz kindly lent me some cash with which to buy the earrings because I'd spent my cash, so then we went to a bank machine and got cash so I could pay him back immediately, and somehow we then got distracted in to a coffee shop where I was supplied with an enormous slice of chocolate cake (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) My husband knew I'd had a good day when I got home and said it had involved lots of music, and chocolate-based snacks (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) |

Oh, and expect a photo to be posted of a very strange thing that was on the 'antique and rare' table. Should get a chance to post it tomorrow. Have not the slightest clue what it was, and it deserves a caption competition if you can keep it clean enough...

Seriously not one of you has spotted someone in a giant wheelchair? Come say hello! And direct me to food, the cafe has just shut when I got hungry up since 4am and had only a Yorkie, gal gotta eat! I *think* you were playing with harps when Maizie and I saw you : I had a big green holdall, and was singing a scale as you were playing, as I do (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) , and Maizie had a big purple bag. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) Baz, Maizie..... SO sorry I only had time for a very quick "helloooooooo" but I was on a really tight schedule. AM now contemplating a trip to Eisenach to see Mr Blezinger..... Travel-Bag x 's OK, I know you're a busy Bag, and our paths cross quite a bit! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) Eisenach does sound fairly tempting... (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) I do know someone who makes recorders... and uilleann/Northumbrian pipes... Glad you all had fun (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) but did any of you purchase??????????????? Not me. Maizie got music, don't know if anyone else got anything! But knowing the track record of katyjay, she probably got 16 recorders, a baroque violin, 73 pieces of sheet music, a gemshorn and thirteen crumhorns of various sizes (IMG:style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif) (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wink.gif) You forgot the kurtle and violone... (IMG:style_emoticons/default/tongue.gif) Glad you all had fun (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) but did any of you purchase??????????????? Not me. My mother in law came to supervise me. I came home with a book. One book. That's all. (Oh, and MIL paid for that as a present to me (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) ) Nurse! There's an unwell forum member here who's not suffering from Gear Acquisiton Syndrome... 2 alto recorders - stat. I bought music as well. Dowland songs for voice and viol consort (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wub.gif) , seasonal (wintry) songs for a combination of voices and viols, and some viol duets. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) Wish I could play in a consort.... |

Well the Early Music Shop have posted a photo rather better than mine to their FB page, so here is that:
(IMG:http://sphotos-a.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc7/395033_505306712820885_1720244108_n.jpg) The middle bit is bone/tusk/similar. The metal bit at the top end, that had a circular hole in it. At the, um, bulbous end, each 'bulb' also had a hole in it, an oval shape. Incidentally, EMS have not said on FB what it is - just that there's a free concert ticket for the best guess! |

Edit - it looks like it is made out of an animal leg bone I thought it was bone, but I figured that if I positively identified it as such, someone would be bound to come along and tell me that it was blatantly narwhal tusk because of the striations or something equally specific (IMG:style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif) |

I'm pretty sure that's a Tibetan human thighbone trumpet. Used in Buddhist monastic ritual as a kind of memento mori. It features on an old LP I have of the monks the Tibetan Buddhist Dalhousie Monastery in India singing the Mahakala Tantra. Mahakala is the guy who attempts to strip away illusions from the newly dead - he is massive, dark blue, covered with human skulls and drinks human blood out of a cranium, but he's on your side really. The music on the LP is a sort of groaning overtony chanting interrupted at completely unpredictable moments by hair-raising blasts on the thighbone trumpet or shattering gong crashes. About the last word in un-easy listening. But if your intended audience is the dead I guess you have to work at being heard.

I had a great time, looked at a lot of stuff and made reams of notes in the recorder masterclass. Also made lots of notes on starter recorders and what I would recommend for each different type of beginner. Accidentally busted my budget with a second hand ebony descant but it was in superb condition and has a wonderful tone and there is no way in the world I would have bought it at the new price. Best of all, it doesn't need playing in because it's second hand.
I am still harpless (thank goodness, says my bank account) but seeing the Camacs has reignited my enthusiasm after having a very disappointing viewing of some other folk harps and deciding that the whole thing was therefore not for me. Now I have seen the Camac ones I am back into harp love. Oh, and I bought some recorder duet music, I didn't look at most of the music as I knew I would buy. I have armloads of posters from the recorder people, too. Yay. |
