There don't seem to be many discussions about bassoon topics on the forums.
Are there many bassoon players among the adult learners?
Also when you began a new instrument what stage did you find most rewarding?

Yes there are and I'm sure one will be along later.

Do have a look around.

Welcome aboard Basil. I am not a bassoon player but if I were to try a new instrument it would be the bassoon, and a baroque one at that. Can't afford it though. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sad.gif) Have you been playing long?

No. Only since Christmas but apart from the diabolical fingering it hasn't been as difficult as I expected although this might just be due to the fact that my bassoon has a lovely voice. Playing soprano saxophone probably made it easier to adjust to the small, double reed embouchure.

Hi Basil and welcome

It is good to see your post. I'm an adult re-starter. I picked up the bassoon last year after a gap of 25 years. I found I could remember the fingering up to the F above middle C. I am finding it difficult to master the fingering for notes above that partly because the fingerings are non-intuitive but also because my embouchure tires at that altitude.

I love the tone and character of the bassoon. I'm really looking forward to playing in an ensemble but due to other commitments I can't do that just yet.

I hope to do my grade 5 this summer. I can't say I think I'm ready for that but my bassoon teacher thinks I am.
