I like Ealing strings. They have so much choice and they'll get loads out for you and leave you as long as you like in a practice room with no pressure. You won't get out of there in a hurry though, that guy can't half talk!

I will have my current violin with me as a comparison so won't be able to take more than 1 away with me, 2 if they provide me with a double case.

When I tried bows out about 18 months ago the lady was very friendly and when I came back to return the bows I could hear an old looking guy going on and on, not letting the customer, an old couple, get a word in!

Ealing is a bit out of the way for me but definately worth the trip as I find there service great and they had lots of choice in my price range last time I visited.

Phelps are nice people, as are Bridgewood & Neitzert.

I'm assuming you're not able to look outside of London? Mind you - you should have plenty of choice in the metropolis!

I bought a GEWA Strato Super Lightweight oblong violin case in brown with beige interior. It is not in stock but I hope to get it in about a week.



Hope you do get it in a week, it took 5 weeks for Gewa to send one I ordered for my wife !


They have just e-mailed me to say it will be 7-10 days before they get the case in stock. I am inclined to wait as is the one I like the most out of the ones I have looked at.


They kept telling me that, but it took 5 weeks in the end and I nearly cancelled it ! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sad.gif)
I stuck it out because I wanted the model with a red velvet interior, as I gave it to my wife as part of a ruby Wedding present (as well as some jewellry)


Out of interest, what model was it that you bought?


Cant exactly remember now, it was a less expensive one (?200 ish) than yours, and shaped. This was about 3 months ago.

I couldn't find the opening time on Bishop's website so I went in the hope it was open on Saturday. It was closed. So I went round to Guivier as I was only in Bond Street.

I tried 7 violins and even avoided looking at the prices till I had tried them all. The cheapest was 6.5k up to 9.5k and one was 25k, which was the one which was obviously the best but not in my price range!

I have got an 8k violin, an English violin by John Betts circa 1810, on trial and propse to try the 7k one I liked next week as i couldn't take 2 in one go.

Anway on to Ealing Strings after a little rest. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sleep.gif)

I am really waiting for a violin I fall immediately in (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wub.gif) with. That violin will fall into my hands someday soon, I hope, and will become mine.

I have a feeling this won't be the particular violin I ending up making a member of my family but we shall see in 6 days time.

Enjoy hunting for your new violin and bow. It's a great excuse to try lots of instruments out. Friends son got a fantastic violin from a Polish maker (in Poland). You could always book some holidays to visit luthiers abroad!

If I go for either of the ones I have on trial I will have blown my entire budget on a violin and have no bow budget. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/blush.gif) However the 8K was a guide and what I thought would be enough to get a suitable and long lasting violin and bow for my needs.

Not sure what it is abour 1810, maybe 3rd time lucky to select one for a trial from a different year!

Trying 30 instruments today was tiring. It was fun apart from having to tune every violin as they were ALL a little flat.
