Hi,

I'm starting to learn my Grade 1 pieces (going to enter for it later this year!) and I've got a fingering query about the C2 piece 'Mini Rag'.

It's in the passage that starts 4 bars from the end - the right hand fingering give suggests 1 2 3 1 2, but I can't understand why it's not 1 2 3 4 5, as that seems easier to me (especially as the same little phrase is repeated 3 times).

Should I be learning it using the fingering they suggest? Is it like that for a reason - to practise that tricky (for me) fingering perhaps?

Any advice gratefully received!

Many thanks,

Just had a quick look.
1-2-3-4-5 is actually very awkward with those notes and a change of hand position somewhere is more comfortable and probably more accurate than the tricky stretch you would need between 4 and 5 on A# to D.

I think the editorial fingering suggestion is better as if you do 1 2 3 4 5, you'd find that you play A# with 3 and B with 4 finding that 3 and 4 are too close to each other, so finger 4 'might' easily slip and touch the C next door and you might play it by accident.
I have learnt it as the editors suggest and find it easy, fluent and leaves me no room for mistake, infact I've tried the fingering you suggested and found it quite 'ackward'.

anyway, see how you go. You don't have to follow the fingering suggested but 'most of the times' (not all the time) you'll find that it has a good reason behind and works best
