I was just wondering what you would do in the situation where you have two instruments to diploma level.
I'm in the middle of preparing for ATCL on one, having decided that out of the options from LCM, AB and TG this is the one I would most enjoy doing. But in the near future, assuming I pass no.1, I'd quite like to do a diploma on my other instrument. If I did another ATCL though I would end up with the same qualification twice...Would you therefore take a diploma with another board?

I would say 'so what?' regarding having the same qualification twice - but then I probably wouldd, given that I have two BA (Hons) [in completely different subjects] (IMG:style_emoticons/default/rolleyes.gif)

I would just go with the board whose requirements suit you best on that instrument - be it in the actual exam components (e.g. quick study or not; scales or not; etc) or the repertoire on the syllabus. Whether it's the same board or not shouldn't really be a consideration.
Having said that, if everything else is completely equal, you could do a different board for a change (or, maybe you'd like to do the same board for familiarity - this will come down to personal preference)

I agree with Maizie - I would do whichever board suits you best and you enjoy. It really doesn't matter if you have two ATCLs or not. I have an ATCL in instrumental teaching and will, hopefully in due course, also have an ATCL in piano performance.

My advice is spread it about and get differents sets of letters. Most of the boards are very similar anyway. The prospect of a gentle viva and a straightforward quick study should not seen as barriers to undertaking DipABRSM, for example. Good luck!

Thanks for your thoughts everyone
About the different sets of letters thing - is it possible to get eg a diploma from trinity and a diploma from guildhall? Even though they would both be the same exam? I'm not sure that makes sense...what I mean is because it's Trinity Guildhall, whether you could get a trinity diploma and then next time a guildhall one?

Although the two colleges still exist separately, Trinity and Guildhall have now completely merged their grade/diploma examining departments, and all current diplomas carry Trinity designations.

You can only get ATCL and FTCL, but you can opt for either LTCL or LGSMD, but the exam's the same.
