And we had the curse of 1966 against us this time...

That was a goal. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sad.gif) Not that it would've made much difference to the final result...

Even though I am happy that germany still takes part of the tournament, I am distressed with this goal, that the referee didn't see.

It was a goal!!

Yes, it definitely was, as happy as I am with the result (sorry guys (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wink.gif) ).

Guess that's us even then - we seem to have a history of goals that aren't ones being given and goals that are ones not being given (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wink.gif)

We'll see what happens against Argentina next - much more nervous about that one than about yesterday's match to be honest.

Well the England team was very poor, so perhaps the result would not have been affected, but Yes it WAS a goal. But it is not just England that are affected. The USA and others have had perfectly good goals disallowed. There has been a serious refereeing error in almost every game.

Argentina's first "goal" against Mexico was definitely offside ... just one of several good goals disallowed.

Then we have the problems of totally innocent players being sent off, of players that almost crippled their opponents getting away without even a reprimand (or even a free kick against in some cases), of players hacked down being booked for diving, of players taking a dive and earning a penalty, and of blatant penalties not being awarded.

It is a mess.

It coulds easily be solved with a few CCTVs monitoring the play at big matches, and a Wimbledon like system of 3 challenges per half (Captain's discretion) to prevent the right of protest from being abused.

But first football has to rid itself of the obnoxious obstacle of Sepp Blatter.

How such a self-serving excuse for a man managed to become FIFA president is beyond me ... but in a world that can make G W Bush president of the USA, Tony Bliar British PM (not to mention Putin in Russia, Sarkozy in France and Berslesconi in Italy) I really should not be surprised.

Sepp Blatter has announced today that he will reopen the debate as to whether there should be goal line technology.

We want more than goal line technology. We want technology to get the right decisions on offsides, fouls v dives, penalty decisions - whole pitch coverage. The TV companies already know how to do it.

Just got home in time to see the penalties in Japan v Paraguay. Was the match itself a good game? I wanted Paraguay to win, so I'm happy, but penalties is always a heart-breaking way to go out for the losers.

As Alan Hansen would say, "it was a non-event" (except for the penalty shoot-out of course).

So you didn't miss much...

I would love to be proved wrong, but I doubt anything will change, sadly...

Just seen this - no! It wasn't me!

(I did have scrambled eggs for brunch though, I suppose that could have done it)

No 3 son was ecstatic to have drawn Brazil in his sweepstake, so he's not very pleased. The rest of us were delighted. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)
