Conclusion: if you want to be able to see while swimming, and avoid the risks of injury and of a horrible eye infection then prescription goggles are the only safe option.
It is my birthday soon. Time to start dropping hints (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

(IMG:style_emoticons/default/agree.gif) Unless you live in an area where your tap and swimming pool water comes from mountain springs, keep it out of your eyes!
I save boiled water from making tea/coffee in a carafe, to avoid having to drink or clean my teeth in London water. I hope acanthamoeba can't jump like fleas from my tap-water-washed glasses into my eyes (IMG:style_emoticons/default/argh.gif)

I think we've gone a little off topic here- I started this thread to share experiences of learning to swim, but it seems to have turned into an eye care discussion!

I am long sighted and consequently can't see very well in the pool (and I do wear goggles). Howver I find if I'm doing crawlthen I'm mostly looking at either the bottom of the pool or my armpit (when I breath), so it doesn't matter that much anyway. I've never bothered with contact lenses, in part because my job is chemistry- contact lenses are a complete no-no in a lab since if you get solvent in your eyes they have a tendency to weld themselves to your eyeballs.

Prescription goggles seem quite inexpensive (ca ?20-30 pounds compared with ?15+ for normal ones), infact everything is relatively inexpensive for swimming (until you start buying racing gear). My other sporting hobby is skiing where a pair of socks can cost ?20!

Hope she enjoys the Games - I've been lucky enough to go to Bermuda a couple of times and my husband was there last week - such a lovely place (although I'm sure your daughter is only concerned with what's going on at the pool :D)

My son has given up swimming - competitive and otherwise. The difference to his free time - and mine too - without training and galas is huge, though we both manage to fill it. He hasn't been near the water since January, but I think he's missing it as exercise, so once the exams are over I expect the jammers and goggles to come out again :)

Best of luck to your daughter :)

Can I ask, do they just take Bermudan Dollars in Bermuda or is it US Dollars at all? I have some and don't know whether to send them!!

As far as I can remember US dollars are welcome. I'll double check with my husband tonight (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

Just checked - yes, US dollars are fine, and it's exactly $1 US to $1 Bermudan (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

Another 30 lengths last night- swimming in the evening is getting to be a bit of a pain, on return lengths I always seem to be swimming in the direction of the setting sun, so I can hardly see. Last week I tried some darker goggles, that just meant I couldn't see in either direction!
