After months of thinking should I let myself in for the stress of both sons sitting exams. I ended up with both boys sitting grades again.

After much discussion with others whether it was appropriate for my 8 year old to sit the grade 5 exam with his choice of pieces. I entered him. He played Clementi Sonatina, Tarantella and Diversion no.5. He managed to score well all round and came back with a distinction. The pieces were so fast on the day but the examiner thought highty of this achievement. He had the confidence to give it all and his results proved this. So I am glad I let him now.

He also managed to squeeze in his grade 3 cello the day after.... also distinction 140. I am still a bit stunned how my 8 year old has managed this. Now we will just have to cram that Grade 5 theory until the summer term.

Hi Frumpybabes
What a fantastic achievement! Do say a BIG well done to him from me.

Re Grade 5 theory at 8... I have no doubt your son would manage to pass this exam BUT from experience I can say that at such a young age he might not remember any of it a few years later. It might be worth swapping boards so he doesn't have to take this exam just yet or then again he might benefit more from Grade 5 practical musicianship instead. Just a thought.
Anyway well done again! Mark has his grade 7 cello this Saturday. I'll keep you posted.

Cheers, we are moving over to Guildhall/ Trinity this year.... different scale patterns are a must for my son he likes scales so the melodic ones should be FUN for him. I am thinking of passing him over to another teacher at the moment although he would rather stay with me. We are studying theory all the time and although we are aiming for grade 5 theory as a target for him, I doubt if he will do it then. He is happy to work at the theory and loves to play all the time still, I can only encourage him to continue as once he gets to secondary he will have less time for practise.
Will think about grade 5 practical musicianship but I am looking into him starting Jazz Piano with someone else too and he wants some drum kit lessons for his birthday now as well.

Good luck to Mark (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) let me know how it goes. I will be thinking of you when my no.1. son takes his grade 5 trumpet on Saturday.

Everyone else thanks for all those lovely comments, he will read all this tomorrow and see how many people are as proud of him as we are.
