Make sure you eat a banana before the exam. It calms down your nerves.
I got 100% in Grade 1 theory, so it is possible to get full marks! :) Car Expert |

Use a pencil Write neatly Don't rush. Check your answers Don't beam quavers between the 2 and 3 beat in 4/4 Beam anything smaller than a quaver in beats. With scales make sure you write ascending/descending when it asks you to. |

Don't rush it, take your time...it is easy to make stupid mistake...and check over your work lots of times!
I checked over my grade 5 theory paper 5 times and was about to leave then I checked it one last time and I found that I had missed a question! So CHECK! |

By the way, can I bring some blank scratch paper into the examination room with me, just in case I need it?

They provide a small sheet of paper - I think you can ask for more if you need it. I'm not sure you'd be able to take any in yourself though.

And the paper contains staves, so you can practice drawing notes, rests, key signatures, etc. I think both sides are the same, but I can't remember.

Thanks! Anyone else have any last-minute advice? How long did the test take most of you? I am sort of worried about not having enough time to finish.

You can stay in the exam room for at least 45 minutes. If you have finished in that time, you can leave and hand in your paper. You can stay for a maximum of 2 hours, which means you will have plenty of time to finish. It took me 45 minutes to finish my Grade 1 paper, but some people recommend to not rush and take as long as you want.
Remember, do not be late! You can be up to half an hour late, but if you're any later that that, you will not be allowed to enter into the examination room. They won't give you any extra time either. Car Expert |

:D Good luck in your exam..
At the end of the exam you have to hand in the scrap paper you used. I didn't know this on my first exam (Grade 2) and had added up the score I thought I should have achieved and it came to 98%....hope they didn't read it but I got 97%....I always wondered if they knocked a mark off for cheek.. BFN :D |

2 hours for G1? I thought it was 90 minutes?
Either way, you should be done in plenty of time, so don't worry. I finished in half an hour, but I never stay in exams until the end - I change right answers to wrong too often! |
