I have discovered that a work colleague and friend is an excellent oboist. He has discovered I am a bad flautist (and a better guitarist/singer/songwriter and a much better pianist). Nonetheless, he has suggested that in the fullness of time, as I improve, we might get together and play duets. More realistically, I have suggested I accompany him on the piano sometime. However, it occurred to me to wonder - are there any duets for flute and oboe?

The flute and the oboe are both melodic instruments so I assumed, yes.

Yes, there are. If you go on to the JustFlutes website you'll find a list. The Baroque trio sonatas are good, and if you get ambitious you could try the Salieri concerto. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

Lots of duets for two flutes would work well, usually with the oboe on the lower line. Just check the ranges before you buy anything.

Have fun, playing chamber music informally is one of the best things you can do IMO (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

That is fun! Alas, if I were to play that one with him we would need another flautist: I don't doubt I could do the piano part and he could do the oboe part, but the flute part is beyond my ability (yet).

There is a lovely book of duets for soprano and alto recorders by James Hook that is easy, tuneful and fun that would suit flute and oboe. A Schott publication I think. Are you coming to Anglesey on March 9th by the way? We could use another flute in the grand finale and another man in the choir. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

A friend of mine was recently lucky enough to aquire a bassoon as her inheritance. (So maybe not that lucky (IMG:style_emoticons/default/mellow.gif) )

Anyway, we already play clarinet/flute and flute/flute duets together, any recommendations for flute/bassoon?

Alas, March 9th clashes with a major chess tournament (at the Winter Gardens in Blackpool, on the same day as a big Brass Band convention, or at least it is most years). Sorry!
