Thalben -Balls 'Elegie' I heard Alison Balsom play it on the trumpet with organ on the tele a few days ago, then I played the original myself in church on Sunday. A beautiful piece. The Thalben-Ball Elegy is a wonderful and very haunting peice of music, but I have never heard it played on trumpet with organ before. Do you remember which TV programme this was broadcast on, as I would like to hear it if at all possible? I have tried searching BBC iPlayer and ITV, but cannot find anything. SB Is that the Bb Elegy? It is indeed a very beautiful and haunting piece. |

'The Truth From Above' - in four-part harmony (IMG:style_emoticons/default/rolleyes.gif)
Unfortunately, it's always to the words of verse 1 or 5, which I know backwards, sideways and upside down by now - but I have to learn verse 4 and sing it on Friday... |

As you may know the elegy is an improvisation on a hymn tune, which was first played by Sir George TB to fill time when the Daily Service on the BBC Home Service unexpectedly finished a few minutes early. I have always wondered which hymn tune it was based on, and then the other day we stumbled on Awake, Awake fling off the Night (Deus Tuorum Militum), and it just 'clicked' as things sometimes do. 'Two Little Boys' as sung by Rolf Harris. He sang it on the radio a couple of weeks ago and now I can't get rid of it - it's still 'playing' in my head every morning when I wake up... (I've even started dreaming about it...)

Sorry SB I have only just seen this post, though others have commented also.
It was played in Howard Goodalls series on Fridays on SkyArts2, now finished. I think the programme was 'Music Box' He interviewed various artists and they occasionally broke off to interprerse a few pieces. Beside Alison Balsom , there were programmes with Emma Johnson, Lief Ove Andsnes, That young scottish vilonist with an Italian name (I have a mental block !) and others. A really good series and very interesting . No doubt it will be repeated. But Alison has recorded it on a CD for Trumpet and Organ Later Edit, I meant Nicola Benedetti ! |
