Hi all
In the C2 piece Grade 4 Piano, Carnival in Rio, 2nd page, the ottava markings, are they for just the right hand alone or both right and left? Many thanks (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) |

I think right hand only. Thanks jm I thought so too - my pupil likes to make both hands an octave higher! I wish they would stipulate RH only - it does get confusing. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) |

I have a student taking this exam in the winter term. He is also learning Carnival. I've assumed that as the 8va is just over the right hand part, then the left hand stays where it is in the bass. It's a fun piece. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

(IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) I think if they wanted both hands an octave up they'd have put 8va over both the left ahd right hand parts. |

I think it's a fun piece too although unfortunately none of my three grade 4 students chose it. They've all chosen "Soldiers". Looking at the Carnival, as others have already said, I would also say that the ottava markings apply to just the right hand only.

Yes, I think it applies to right hand only. I have an adult student who's chosen it, and that's how we're doing it.

(IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) If your pupil is the sort who likes logical explanations you could point out that the LH part could easily have been written out on the stave in the higher octave, if that was what the composer intended; whereas the RH part would have required tons of ledger lines. |

Hi all thanks for your replies.
My pupils is fine with this explanation and will quickly adjust to playing the left hand at it's normal register. He is really enjoying this piece. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) |
