I wondered if anyone knew why in 'Liza', a Grade 8 Piano C list piece there are brackets round an accidental?
It's on Page 2 of the pice, line 2, bar 1, LH last note is Ebb (double flat) - why is the double flat in brackets as it's not been used in the bar previously? I assume it's optional; to me and the student who is working on it, it sounds better using the Ebb. Thanks, David W |

I don't know that piece, but usually brackets are used when the editor assumes the composer meant it that way, but it wasn't in the original score. So in your case the original score probably said e but the editor thought (just as you and your student) that ebb was what the composer really intended. I hope this makes sense!

Thanks for your reassuring message - this agrees with my own view. These Chappell editions say they are the 'authentic George Gershwin edition' but I have my doubts as to whether GG had much to do with them.
