Well over a foot here now and still falling. Hubbies work closed today too, as the site is in accessible. I am just so pleased that my elder sister was still at my Mum's when we had the first snow, so that she is still with her. I can't imagine what it would have been like if my Mum had been there on her own as the carers can't get to her.

I hope this doesn't last much longer, the world just stops.

I went out with friends on Monday, and in some places it was literally almost waist-height on me (which of caused cued much teasing, as they're all over six feet tall and I'm barely 5'2".... (IMG:style_emoticons/default/rolleyes.gif) ) there's just so much of it!

I'm still having to walk to the local shops due to not being able to get the car out. Yesterday they'd completely sold out of milk so I got there really early this morning and they had no skimmed or whole milk, and only a few bottles of semi-skimmed. Also no bread (which I didn't want anyway fortunately), and very little in the way of fruit and vegetables, although again fortunately I've got plenty of frozen vegetables. They said supplies just aren't getting through due to the snow. The main roads are clear here now so I don't know where the hold-up is.

Admittedly a different part of the world, but there's a huge bakery near me. Down an ungritted road. Getting the large lorries out of there would at the moment be a nightmare (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sad.gif)

I've had 70% cancellations this week from pupils (can't blame them...can't get down my street - those that have come are those in walking distance)

my 2 exams for today have been cancelled (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sad.gif)

Don't shout at me for saying this, but.....





Schools seem to shut for snow at the drop of a hat (or the drop of a snowflake), whereas businesses tend to soldier on. How often do you hear that Tesco, Sainsburys or Morrisons is closed? Hospitals don't grind to a halt, police stations, fire stations and ambulance depots carry on.

I think this depends on the area, Aeolienne. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) I was at school around the same time as you, and both my primary and secondary schools did tend to close in heavy snow. Whilst my primary school was only around 4 miles away (if you took the shortcut across the fields - it was 5 miles by road), I don't think childen as young as 5 should have been expected to walk that kind of distance through several inches of snow which was often deeper where it had drifted (and I'm talking about hidden drifts which could be a deep as a child was tall). My secondary school was 15 miles away, and it's catchment area had a diameter of around 35-40 miles. In heavy snow, the only way in or out of our village was on foot - and it was the same for lots of other villages in the area. Sometimes one of the farmers would manage to clear a bit of the road - but the snow tended to just drift again so the road was never passable for long. People were prepared for such weather - you always made sure you had enough supplies (including things like dried milk, camping gas stoves, spare fuel etc) to last if you ended up stuck in the village for several days.
