I've just taken on a new flute pupil who's been entered for Grade 6. It seems that the flute teacher she had at school has now gone on maternity leave and by all accounts, it seems the replacement is pretty useless. I'm not at all keen on someone having two teachers, but she's very keen and I think that unless she gets some decent input, she's not going to do particularly well.
From List A, she's doing the Gluck 'Minuet and Dance of the Blessed Spirits'. I'm ashamed to say that although I recognise the piece, it isn't one I've used before. The edition she's got, published by Schott, is just called 'Dance of the Blessed Spirits' with no mention of a minuet, though it does have two sections (one marked Andante and one marked Lento). The Schott is not the edition given in the syllabus. Does anyone know which is right in all this? |

The Andante is the minuet, and the Lento the dance. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

Thank you - I knew you'd know (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) I assume it's OK to use an edition other than that given in the syllabus? (need to read that bit!) |

Most editions are similar enough (mine use the one in Best of Grade 5). I have seen a version, however, where the melodic material in the andante/minuet is distributed differently between the flute/piano. The edition TG name has a number of held notes in the flute part whilst the piano plays the moving melodic notes. |

After all, I'll do what I can to help, but I didn't and wouldn't have entered her at this stage - I'll just have to try and turn it into as positive an experience as possible I think! |

Thought I'd resurrect this with another query...
The copy of the Gluck she has indicates a DC of the minuet after the dance. It's not really clear whether this is expected in the exam - my feeling is not as it'll be too long, and even if she did go back, I suspect they'd stop it. Maybe the edition given in the syllabus doesn't have the DC? There's no problem doing the DC, but it just seems to make for a very long piece, plus the other two, and the couple of orchestral extracts. |

I played this for grade 5 ABRSM and did play the full DC in the exam (I was really hoping that I wouldn't have to but the examiner wanted the whole thing)

The last time a pupil played this for a Trinity exam I was accompanying and asked the examiner if they wanted the DC - they did.

Thanks - we'll go with that. I think I'm just concious of the time as she seems to have three quite longish pieces, plus two orchestra extracts - it adds up quickly!

I did this for my grade 5, MANY years ago. My edition has an ending for the Lento to be used when played as a separate piece. My copy is marked up to play this as the ending and not go back for the DC, so I'm guessing I did this is in the exam. I don't think I gave the examiner the option. I thought I'd report back that we did prepare the DC, though once the examiner had worked out that's what was happening he stopped it about four bars in. Seemed to go OK though - in the end I concluded it sounded a bit odd without the DC so got quite used to it, even if it made it quite long! She passed, so it must have been OK.
