Hi, I'm a teacher, just started putting kids into Jazz exams, only one thing. Our direstor of education has just mentioned to me that the scales writen in the ABRSM jazz book are not actually the scales the students will be asked to play. i.e for sax the scales are C major, G mixolidan and D dorian (All based from C major of course)
I need to know if my students are expected to perform other scales or modes thereof. e.g E Dorian (from D major) or C mixolidian (From G major)

Please help, as i dont want my students to enter their exam unprepared.

Thanks

Can't help re sax (I'm a piano teacher!) but I have put students in for AB jazz piano and the scales for those are exactly as printed in the books. This is not the case for all jazz/popular boards, I also use Rockschool and their scales give an example only of each type of scale in the higher grades. Have you checked that the book matches the syllabus?

Hi

I've entered quite a few pupils for ABRSM jazz clarinet and sax exams and all scales are asked exactly from the book.

As I recall the ABRSM have their own specific scale books for Jazz students. However I would seriously recommend any serious Jazz Student pick up the following Jazz Scale book- http://www.amazon.co.uk/Scales-Jazz-Improv...mp;sr=8-1-spell
