...someone can get an A at music A-level if they didn't get an A* at GCSE?

Because I'm borderline between A* and A and I'm really worried that I haven't got an A*, because the univeristy I want to go to requires an A at A-level. And I've got it into my head that if I don't get an A* at GCSE, then there's not much chance of me getting an A at A-level.

So really just wanted to see what other people got for GCSE and how that corresponds to their A-level result or prediction. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/unsure.gif)

I got an A at GCSE music. However, my current music teacher thinks I am going to get a C and I cant say I disagree as I think he is right. I am aiming for higher however, so resits are always an option.

Dont forget that A level is a lot different and harder than at GCSE, different people come out the other end with different results.

I actually found A-level much easier than G.C.S.E, with the more focused syllabus being more suited to me. I did not get a great mark at G.C.S.E but managed an A at AS-level and then due to disastrous aural skills I ended up with a B overall for the A-level. Not too bad, and I've just passed a degree in the stuff so I don't believe any grade at any level means such and such on the next level.

I'd be interested to know how people would vote if they'd had to do their GCSEs and A levels without any coursework counting towards the final mark and no half way exam either (ie. an AS). Just two full-on years of study and then two or three, three hour exam papers.

I've never understood the point of A* either. Just another way of the government pumping up the results I reckon.

Isn't there a plan for there to be A*s at a level for our year as well? not sure how that swings things. I'm doing a level but haven't done GCSE so time will tell if I'm capable of an A. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wacko.gif)

The A* grade will be introduced for A-Levels in September, along with brand new specifications for the majority of A-Level courses. Seeing as you have already started your A-Level, you won't be affected by it.

Singerpianist, it doesn't really matter whether you get A or A* when the GCSE results come out; you will be as good as you are. As others have said, A-level music is different from GCSE, so you may find it suits you better.

By the time you are applying to universities you will have a very fair idea of how you are doing at AS level, and can choose the unis you apply to accordingly. Perhaps it's best not to worry too much at this point about which university you'll be going to, although aiming high is in general a good thing.

I won't be voting, as I am pre-historic! (I mean pre-GCSE), but I can see the results, Sarah123.

As many people have said, GCSE does not prepare you for AS / A levels really, although the compositional skills you have learnt by GCSE may help towards next stage. So even if you did not get A*, you should n't worry...

i can't vote yet...someone keep this going until August!
I dunno what i'll get for GCSE till results day, and I won't know my predicted grade for A level till october!
I'm predicted an A or A*, but i dunno...i fear it may depend on what is done with the listening paper...i'd hate it if those 4 marks would have made a difference between grades...but will have to wait and see...

You should be abe to click on 'see results' or something like that next to the box that says 'vote!'...I can't vote either, but can still see the results. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)

Oh dear, I've just noticed the show results button! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/ph34r.gif)

I always assumed that you couldnt see the results till you'd voted to stop you being biased by seeing the results before voting, if that makes any sense.
