Following on from a random post I made in another thread.. (I know this is total drivel... so don't read on if you don't like drivel)
I'm thinking of pioneering the sport of "extreme violining". This is like extreme ironing but instead of taking an ironing board and iron somewhere and ironing clothes in silly places http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Extreme_ironing the idea would be to take your violin somewhere bizarre and play it there. People could post pictures of themselves playing the violin somewhere "extreme" or make a video and the winner would be the person who had played in the most extreme place. I think I would have to find a cheap violin so that I wasn't taking one of my babies anywhere dangerous - they wouldn't like that. A violin case with rucksack style straps is pretty much essential I would say. My violin has already been 300 metres up a mountain on foot (well he wasn't on foot, I was) to play in a church. The church wasn't "extreme" but maybe if I had played in the forest on the way that might count. Living in the alps, I think my destinations will be mainly mountain peaks but I'm wondering what other extreme destinations other people can come up with. |

Well, I am off to climb Mount Blanc next year.....shall I take mine with me? Can you imagine, the first few bars of Bela Bartok and then.......AVALANCHE . I'm game. I am not sure my walking friend will approve, but they can just back off........ 70000 feet...we're sliding.....dig in with the crampons girl, dig in......save the violin, save the ***ing violin..... Too extreme? Too much coffee (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wacko.gif) I'd still be game. *****Post reported ****** (IMG:style_emoticons/default/ph34r.gif) P.s. Bet I would win with MB.......OR, what about under water when I go diving next? Cooooool. I love this idea. |

Genius (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)
How about the Australian Outback? On a boat in the middle of the sea? Up a tree? (actually, might try that one... I went to Center Parcs once and I did this thing called tree trekking: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MpQxpuJVp84&feature=fvst It was really cool!) Oooh, in the dome walk-way bit of St Paul's Cathedral? In a hot air balloon? |

Didn't someone once take a piano up Ben Nevis (or somewhere like that) and play it?

Let's stick with the violin.... (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wink.gif) This was why I didn't want the woodwind players joining in - not because I want to exclude them... but because it would be easier to cart a flute somewhere extreme compared to a violin. We could maybe have different classes for the competition: Small woodwind, large woodwind, violin, cello, piano etcetc to make sure we are comparing like with like. I think Mont Blanc would win if you could get a violin up there! |

Are we sure we want other members of the orchestra joining in....really? It would have to be under the stipulation that they can endure and contribute as much drivel as the strings...... All those in favour raise strings please...... |

A flute could probably be carried up Mount Everest - a violin probably not. Whether a flautist would have the breath to get a note up there I don't know! |

A string quartet on a roundabout (as in a childrens roundy roundy one), or playing Flight of the Bumblebee on. Rollercoaster?

I think Mont Blanc would win if you could get a violin up there! On a serious note....I wonder what the tuning would be like - up there? I would have to take my pitch pipes. Well the strings would go sharp. I wouldn't fancy gut strings up there. |

A string quartet on a roundabout (as in a childrens roundy roundy one), or playing Flight of the Bumblebee on. Rollercoaster? Roundabout = (IMG:style_emoticons/default/ill.gif) and Flight of the Bumblebees = YEEEHAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRR - love that one. Well the strings would go sharp. I'll have to remember this. |
