I would just like to commend rosfrog's very considered response to AnnC's post. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) Does he get a sticker? (IMG:style_emoticons/default/tongue.gif) Oh come on (IMG:style_emoticons/default/rolleyes.gif) De l'huile sur le feu if I ever did see it. Non, seulement une blague... Rosfrog has not been courteous in everything that he has written. To describe the posts of a well known professional performer and choral conductor amongst others as “drivel†is insulting. To add the question; “Lord, why are singers and singing teachers so precious. It’s tedious†was not respectful either. Neither have other people been, I always recommend John 8:7 here (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wink.gif) However, is this really a question about who started what and who is right in the end? (IMG:style_emoticons/default/blink.gif) Of course there is not but one classical method. That was why I used the term in the plural! There are as many styles as there are of modern music. I would expect any vocal coach or teacher to be able to alter their own style to suit the performance of lute songs, different styles of Baroque, including ornamentation of the period and country, to early opera, later works and Art Songs, Victorian parlour songs etc etc etc . There is not one classical style. To talk about being able to teach a student the set up to produce a classical sound is just inaccurate. I disagree, since it is merely the same vocal set-up, no matter if you sing lute songs or Baroque, coloraturas or legato lines, trills or runs. You might use a slightly different set-up between dramatic and lyric repertoire, but then again, that very much depends on your basic vocal structure. What you talk about is musical style, and I agree completely that these stylistic differences need to be taught. However, this has nothing to do with physiological function in the first place. In modern styles, we talk about using different vocal set-ups - heavy rock for instance is completely different from folk - this is not just a style-question, but also a functional one. That's why it is not inaccurate to teach a student the set-up of a classical sound - after that, there is of course much more to come in the field of musicianship and stylistic appropriateness, I completely agree. As to your quick fixes, we don’t produce them because we see our task as being able to produce all round musicians with a good knowledge or styles and repertoire, to develop sound aural skills, to teach the theory behind the music, performing skills, etc and this does not happen in a few lessons. I do the same, and every student who wishes to learn these things will be taught accordingly. However, not every singer is interested in it. I also supervise professional and semi-professional singers, and they just want to sing and work on performance issues, and they sometimes need a "quick fix" (needless to say that in the long run, the need for these quick fixes gets less). That's completely fine with me. Of course a teacher can decide that he/she doesn't take on students like that - that's fine as well, I really don't see why one or the other should be better or worse. The student decides what they want and what their goals are, not me ... I feel that you have driven away several teachers who had good and useful advice to offer and the Voice Forum may be the poorer for it. I really cannot understand this - who is this going to punish apart from yourselves because you have to limit yourselves from taking part (which already doesn't seem to be too easy). Why not just get on with it, agree to disagree, and that's it? There will always be people or ideas we cannot agree with - if I always b#####ed off in a huff in real life if someone seemingly stepped on my toes, I probably would be on the run constantly (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wink.gif) So come on, let's all be happy again and discuss interesting things instead of being annoyed (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wink.gif) |
