Oh dear... I'm still trying to do a bit of driving every day, as I really do still need the practise. So I offered to take my boyfriend down to a friends house for some musicking activities. Seemed a bit off to let him walk, loaded down with keyboard, guitar etc. I carefully planned my route to avoid the icky bits of the city centre, but ended up down a narrow lane with a recycling lorry in front blocking the road. For about 20 minutes. Some of the other cars were driving up the pavement to edge around, but this really didn't seem like a good idea to me. Then boyfriend utterly fails to look out for the street names, so we got lost in MORE windy streets fulls of cars. And then, when I kicked him out and told him to walk the rest of the way (not quite as bad as it sounds, we were pretty close by then, and I was stuck up a dead end faced with doing a 3 point turn in my car for the first time. On a hill.) THEN I also got horribly confused trying to get home (you know when you realise you're in the wrong lane time after time after time and really can't do anything about it, so just go more and more out of your way?) so ended up snarled up in the city centre one-way system. Add in a few inconvenient stalls at the numerous traffic lights, and several drivers who insisted on staying right up the back end of my car and I am THOROUGHLY TRAUMATISED... (IMG:style_emoticons/default/argh.gif) Boyfriend can get the bus home. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/ph34r.gif) I really do feel for you! I never leave home without my satnav - even on routes that I know. I still panic in places I don't know well... W (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sad.gif) |

I feel better for writing it down. Have stopped shaking now. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/blush.gif) Hopefully there will come a point where I don't feel so nervous driving on my own... I think I need to start using a Satnav. Although my eyesight is good enough to drive, I really struggle to read roadsigns in time for them to be useful (hence the 'in the wrong lane' issue). I also had to take my driving test in a different city, so its not like I've ever done a lot on driving in this area, so I never really know where I'm going!

The first time I did a long-ish journey on my own, I got up in the morning as if it were a work day, and drove there in the rush hour. Not insanity, but a deliberate ploy...each junction/roundabout I approached, we were queueing, giving me plenty of time to read the road signs and get myself in the right place (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) It worked really well for me.
People who get really close up behind you, they stressed me for years after I started driving. Really nasty. It did wear off in the end, although it's still not nice it doesn't end up with me getting to my destination and then collapsing in to a heap of tears. |

Don't try Satnav in Italy... it tried to send us up a one in three hill with steps and a handrail in the middle... in a car! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/ohmy.gif) |

Lots to learn, like playing a musical instrument. What worked for me was getting the firm's Transit van to drive just after I passed. No-one gets in your way - white van man coming through. Keep plugging away and it gets easier. Satnav? Nah. Learn to read a map. Drivers up your backside? Slow down, and down, and down..... They don't it like but tough. |

I felt like a total beginner at driving for the first few months after I got my car - that's when you really start to learn to drive, but if you're not showing L plates you don't get a lot of sympathy from other drivers. Hang on in there - it will get better very soon. |

Can't drive, myself, but am reminded of a story told to me by a fabulous 90 year old friend who served in WW2 - he learnt to drive by driving tank transporters and said something similar (and he never took a driving test because they just gave hima licence after he got out of the army, something like that). Hope it gets easier for you. Have to admit that the reason I have not yet learnt to drive is precisely fear of this sort of thing. |

Poor Bagpuss. I can vouch for the fact that she really HAS had an utter c*ap day (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sad.gif) . I did try to improve things by being a listening ear and plying her with Earl Grey and cake but she is still vewwy sad... (IMG:style_emoticons/default/thereThere.gif) Very wise observation once spotted on a greetings card: "Some days are just a waste of eyeliner. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sad.gif) " |

Waited in all morning for a couple of really really really essential parcels to be delivered. One has just arrived. The other (without which parcel A is completely useless) 'might be at the back of the van' or 'might be back at the depot' or, presumably might be completely and utterly lost. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/mad.gif) Will I still be in 'later' (anytime between 4 and 8) - or do I want to rearrange delivery for Tuesday?
(IMG:style_emoticons/default/mad.gif) (IMG:style_emoticons/default/mad.gif) (IMG:style_emoticons/default/mad.gif) And at no point did I stop smiling and reassuring the delivery man that 'that's fine', 'I understand', and 'yes, I know it's not your fault.' :resigned sigh emoticon:, :resigned sigh emoticon:, :resigned sigh emoticon:. |

And at no point did I stop smiling and reassuring the delivery man that 'that's fine', 'I understand', and 'yes, I know it's not your fault.' Well done you! Directing the scream to here is a much better plan than giving the delivery man a bad day (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) It doesn't help you out any, but neither would shouting at him have got you anywhere either. I do hope that the parcel turns up quickly, and he drops it round to you swiftly to make up for you being nice about it. (Once I was on a training course, and waiting for the [work-provided chauffeur] car to take me home. It didn't turn up. I phoned the central number to ask. They contacted the driver who said he'd been there but there was nobody around - odd, since reception was there if nothing else, and I'd finished my training early and been waiting at the time he was due to collect me! So the driver went back, and funnily enough, my husband opened the door and told him he was supposed to be bringing me home, not collecting me from home. The central services lady phoned me back and said she'd send him straight down to me, but as it was a Friday night, M25, etc, it would be at least an hour and a half on a good run, so...sorry. And I said it wasn't a problem, I had a book, I was sat on the comfy sofa in reception, and I'd see the driver when I saw him. And the lady thanked me for being so nice about it. I replied that it wasn't her fault, it wasn't the end of the world just a human error, and getting grumpy at her wasn't going to get me home any quicker. Within five minutes she phoned me back to say she'd found a spare driver in my area and had diverted him from his job a bit later on [for which she had got a replacement driver] to collect me now and get me home. Now that definitely wouldn't have happened if I'd been grumpy at her (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)) |

Nice one, mel2. At least I've tested my waterproof mascara nicely (it isn't).

Cannot believe my bad luck right now...
Got challenged for buying paracetamol in Sainsburys and couldn't find my driving licence so I thought I'd lost it and had no idea where as I haven't used it for a while (it's a provisional and I haven't had lessons for ages so I only use it for ID). Rang up to cancel and was told I'd have to replace it first, at a charge of ?20. I decided to do it there and then despite the fee being non-refundable as I wanted to cancel the old one in case of identity theft etc. Went to put my card back in my purse and discovered the old licence hiding behind another card! I rang up to see if I could cancel the transaction but I can't, so I'm ?20 down and having to wait for a new licence for nothing! AAAAAAAARGH! |

Can feel for you there... at least it actually wasn't stolen and on a day when handbag is stolen then you are subjected to a tax-disc theft later the same day. Ho hum it was recoverable. Your licence might have caught you ?20.00 but at least you will not have your ID taken as a result. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) |
