I'm not off work, but I'm definitely under the weather - my guess is an incipient cold, probably a gift from my over-generous son who was suffering from one last week! I'd have liked to stay at home, but thought I should struggle in as the year 11 coursework is on.

I wasn't sick, just tired. Out of interest did they give a reason?

I had a sore head (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sad.gif)
Didn't cancel any lessons though...just fired some tablets into me on coffee breaks (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) I think when I wasn't self employed, I was far more likely to take a sick day... (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wink.gif) |

I'm not sick but I did have the most dreadful mishap which could have potentially been serious. I was in a bit of a hurry to clear up the kitchen after lunch and I went to pick up an innocent looking plate sitting on the worktop (situated next to an in-built cooker). I picked it up and turned to walk over to the dishwasher to stack the plate. Somehow I misjudged my distance and I struck the plate a glancing blow against the side of the glass door of the oven. There was the most almighty crash and the next second I was looking at a gaping hole where the glass door had been!!!! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/ohmy.gif) (IMG:style_emoticons/default/ohmy.gif) (IMG:style_emoticons/default/ohmy.gif)
I just couldn't believe what I had done. I just stared then burst into floods of tears - from shock - glass and bits were everywhere all over the kitchen which somehow had missed me completely - and what would hubby say - he was in the next room (IMG:style_emoticons/default/unsure.gif) (IMG:style_emoticons/default/unsure.gif) (IMG:style_emoticons/default/whistling.gif) After a sit down and a cup of tea we managed to board and tape up the hole - lots of glass still in there - and made it safe. I will have to raid my piggy-bank I think - a new door will be about £250 (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wacko.gif) Luckily we won't need a new oven which would be a lot more!!! Feeling a bit shaken still (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sad.gif) |

How annoying for you, Busybee. The main thing is you weren't hurt, though.

There is definitely something a bit dodgy about glass oven doors. A few years ago I had a similar experience when removing the glass panel from our oven door to clean it - it suddenly shattered with no apparent blow or twisting etc. Nasty shock, you have my sympathies!

(IMG:style_emoticons/default/thereThere.gif) Sue Thank you lots (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) Feeling a bit better now. I had a chat with Mum on the phone and she thinks glass doors might be dodgy too - she said the plate should have smashed - not the door! Sorry - I've sent the thread a bit off topic. Hope everyone else is feeling well today if not clumsy! |

(IMG:style_emoticons/default/thereThere.gif) Sue I can't imagine this ever happening to me - I'm far too lazy to remove the glass from my oven door! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) BusyBee, you have my commiserations. Your mishap is exactly the sort of thing I might do, but I would never have expected a glass oven door to shatter like that. How scary! I hope you can claim on the insurance, as it sounds expensive to replace. I hope your heart rate is back to normal by now! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) |

Thank goodness you weren't hurt Busy Bee. What an awful shock though. Yes it was a shock and I'm still counting my blessings. After reading Sue's post and chatting to Mum I think I will do some oven research before I spend the £250. Apparently (back on topic again!) the design has now changed - putting the main oven at the bottom instead of at the top (safety reasons?)- even though spare parts are still available for the old. I might find one without the glass. Perhaps the mishap will have a positive outcome. I feel like Pollyanna playing the 'glad game' (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) |
