Yorkshire Late Starters Strings is holding a morning taster session for anyone who would like to try a stringed instrument, or who played a long time ago and is now rather 'rusty'!
Instruments are provided and the morning is free. Anyone interested please contact the secretary via the website to book a place. |

I went to this last year, it was a great morning, starting with getting to grips with the instrument and finished with a 'performance' with the whole group (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) I had a go on a cello, learnt quite a few notes then went to my clari lesson and promptly forgot them (IMG:style_emoticons/default/blush.gif) If anyone is in the area and contemplating going - do it (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)

I am very interested in this. I learned cello for my last two years at school, which were 1963 and 64 .
Handed instrument back, and haven't even touched one since. Approaching retirement, I had thought of buying a cello and having another go, but not really wishing to make a commitment until I was sure I would keep it up once started. Maybe I can make it on Feb 4th. |

Yes I have contacted them and will almost certainly go . First touch of a cello since 1964 ! Wonder what I can remember.

Found some of my old cello music last night 'Petits Morceaux' by Squire which seems to be Grade 4, and A Sonata in C Op40 by Breval, first movement is Grade 5 and second Grade 4.
Thats further on than I thought I had got in 2 years. But , asI said it was 47 years ago ! |

I had a really good time. They didnt put me in the complete beginners group who were only learning open strings and first finger. Instead they took me to another room where the next stage were a small string orchestra playing mostly in first position only. I was lent a really nice Jay Haide 'cello (Carol Truemans reserve 'cello), and the first position notes came back to me quite quickly. I wasnt always keeping up with them but it was less boring than the beginners would have been. Well now I cant decide whether to buy an instrument and have lessons again, or whether I might be frustrated learning again at a lower level when I am Dip standard on piano and organ. .
I guess Barry would have enjoyed the little orchestra too. |

Like you I've found I picked the basics back up quite quickly. The challenge for me is the orchestra I'm playing with and dealign with stuff that's got lots of shifting in it....
