Just curious to know what people think of this piece, experiences playing it, etc. My only experience with Berg is playing excerpts from Wozzeck in orchestra, and while I enjoyed it more than I thought I would, I wasn't expecting to like the sonata so much. It sounds a lot like Scriabin, but less visceral, powerful in a different way somehow. What are your thoughts?

I love single movement sonatas and this is one of my favourites, it's very beautiful with lovely atonal meanderings. I do find it very hard to memorise so have given up on that!

It's one I keep intending to explore, thanks for reminding me.

I'm glad there are others who like this piece (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) After having read through it, I can say it's harder and more complex than it looks on the page, especially in terms of bringing out the motifs in different voices. I've heard it played a lot lately, so I probably won't work on it now, but I'll keep in mind since unlike most 20th century sonatas it isn't technically monstrous (IMG:style_emoticons/default/ph34r.gif)

The first two pages are easy enough to get to grips with. It all goes a bit bonkers a few pages in, but yes you are right, it doesn't seem a beastly as some other 20th C repertoire. Having said that, I can't play it very well!

Lovely piece, I have attempted bits of it, but it does get a bit tricky later on!
