At St George's, Bristol
Lunchtime concert

Thursday 28 October 1pm

(IMG:style_emoticons/default/clarinet.gif) Timothy Orpen
and
(IMG:style_emoticons/default/piano.gif) Simon Lepper

  • Mozart Violin Sonata No 26 in Bb Major K378
  • Widmann Fantasie for Clarinet Solo
  • Barmann Adagio Op 23
  • Milhaud Scaramouche Op 165b
Described by The Times as a 'blazing talent', the exceptional clarinettist, Timothy Orpen, is well on his way to establishing himself as one of the finest musicians to have emerged in Britain for some years.

Simon Lepper is one of the UK's most gifted piano accompanists, an unfailingly responsive and acutely sensitive pianist, marked out to follow Gerald Moore and Roger Vignoles in the great tradition.

Here, four outstanding works for clarinet receive beautifully voiced performances of technical brilliance and consummate understanding.

Ah one of my favourites too. Though ideally for me in the violin, viola, piano version. Of course I'm the same with the Brahms clarinet, erm, viola sonatas.

I've booked to see 'Friday Fright Night' at the Bridgewater Hall, Manchester at 7.30pm.

The conductor is Jonathan Pryce-Jones with the Manchester Concert Orchestra and the Halifax Choral Society.

Thos will also be my first time of going watching an orchestra, and I'm really looking forward it.

Loz xx

Thanks for reminding me about this. Timothy Orpen plays the exam pieces on the ABRSM grade 7 CD, and he looks quite jolly (daughter might say "hot" (IMG:style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif) )in the photo in the sleeve notes, so my daughter's keen to go. Simon Lepper has been kept busy by ABRSM in the past too; we have various CDs of cello exam pieces, where he is playing the accompaniment.

Not sure if we'll make it, though, as we're supposed to be leaving for a long weekend in Sheffield that day..

We were at the Colston Hall last Sunday to hear the Philharmonia Orchestra under Vladimir Ashkenazy (sp?). I hadn't been to an orchestral concert in a very long time and thoroughly enjoyed it. It was nice to see and hear the bass clarinet in Rachmaninov 2, as well as the ace clarinet solo in the third movement.

My brother's visiting later in the month so we can hear the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra play a programme of Michael Nyman music, again at Colston Hall.

3 Nov - recital by winner of this year's Chopin competition, which was announced yesterday. Russian pianist (can't remember her name, I'm afraid) and first woman to win the competition in 45(!) years

Nope, he's playing the Lizst concertos at RFH. And I guess that was why you told me you'd pass when we were booking the tickets (a while ago)... (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wink.gif)

(IMG:style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif) I was looking for a smiley holding a "Ditto" board. None such smiley exists so I went with a random smiley holding a random sigh. (I have modified the nice thread smiley in the past to provide my own personal greetings ;-)

Idil Biret playing Chopin this Sunday, whatever the date is, at St. Paul's Church at Covent Garden and then (not that this is relevant) to the cinema to see Eat, Sleep and Pray.

Going to see La Traviata tomorrow night. Not really much of an opera buff but am trying! Just hope I don't fall asleep like last time (IMG:style_emoticons/default/blush.gif) (not a reflection on the performance but general tiredness + big dinner + nice comfy velvety seats = (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sleep.gif) )
