I have seen this violin online and was wondering if anyone could recommend it? It would be for my daughter who will need a 3/4 size violin after completing her grade 2 exam. We only have one small music shop which sells a limited range of violins nearby, so can't try before we buy. This violin should only last a couple of years (taking her to grade 4 standard) before she would need a full size violin and I want a decent violin, but don't want to spend too much at this stage.

Her teacher wants her to work on her bowing technique, so thought that the composite bow included in this outfit would be a good idea.

The online supplier offers a standard set up or an improved one with a strings upgrade - is this worth it, bearing in mind it would then be send in the post? Or is it a better idea to buy the standard set up and take it to the local shop for better strings if they're dire?

Any advise would be much appreciated.

If you have a local shop why not just get one from them?
That way you can probably try one on approval before you buy it, and also discuss better set-up and strings with the people who would be doing it for you anyway!

The local shop only has some basic starter violins and I wanted a slightly better model than they have available. I agree that it would have been ideal if they had a couple of violins to try out, but they don't so ordering online seems to be the best option.

I have looked at a few violins online and thought that the Loreato seemed suitable, but just wondered if anyone had played it and how they found it?

Hi Casca,

(IMG:style_emoticons/default/welcome.gif) to the forums.

I only have one student who upgraded to a Primavera. I'm not sure which outfit she bought, but it did see her through Grade 4.

Which set-up you decide on really depends on how much they are charging for the improved one - and which strings are used for the upgrade.

Can the local shop order one of these violins for you, preferably without obligation? Your daughter could also try the ones they do have in the local shop, just in case there is anything that you and she feel will suit.

Hi

Thanks - I will see if they can bring in some stock on spec.

The online shop offers the better set up plus D'Addario Prelude strings for an extra ?20, so not too much more. I haven't heard of these strings though, so not sure if they are much of an improvement.

If you look on stringzone.com there are some (mostly good) reviews of these strings.

Thanks to everyone for all the advice! You're certainly given me a few things to think about before I commit to making a purchase.
