I have been preparing case studies and lesson plans, but am not at all sure about the 8,000 word essay on teaching practice. Has anyone done the LTCL? I could use some pointers

I've recently done the Teaching ATCL and got Distinction. I found the marking structure was very much based around the syllabus, and very transparent (once I knew that!). For the written part of the ATCL, make sure you cover exactly what they ask you to and use all the examples they require. For the teaching resources section, I didn't come up with fantastically complicated ideas, but it checked all the boxes in the syllabus and I got good marks for it. The only marks I dropped were on the teacher observation written work as it asked you to discuss a number of points for 2 students you followed. I discussed all points for one student but neglected to much student2's prior learning experience and they knocked a few marks off. So it goes to show, make sure you thoroughly read the syllabus and make sure everything is covered. I found I wasn't able to discuss many points I made in much detail as the word count wouldn't allow, but it seems that the points much be covered, however brief.

Good luck.

Hi,

I know that this thread is a little old now but I am looking in to working towards the LTCL teaching diploma and have some queries if someone with some experience of this diploma can help?

In the case studies part of the syllabus it says:

QUOTE

The case studies should cover three pupils or groups of pupils (two to four), at different stages of learning, that the
candidate has taught for at least three months before starting the case study. Total contact time described (for all pupils/groups
of pupils combined) should be not less than 20 hours, and should be verified using the Verification form (Appendix 3).

Does this mean that the contact time is 20 hours per student, or 20 hours in total between the three students? I know it mentions 'combined' above so I'm guessing it's 20 hours between them, but I just want to be sure.

In the peer observation section it says:

QUOTE

This component involves the observation of another instrumental/vocal teacher at work, and having that teacher observe you.
Both observations should be completed during the period covered by the case studies (1.2) and be accompanied by a copy of the appropriate pro forma, completed and signed by the teacher in question, or suitable alternative person in authority.

It doesn't mention whether there's a certain amount of lessons that are supposed to be observed, or if it's just one each? It also doesn't mention how the 1500 word write up is done. Does the other teacher feedback to you on all of the points in the syllabus, and you then take their notes and write the case study on your observation of them, and their observation of you?

I'd appreciate any guidance that can be given.

Thanks, Lucid (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

I read this as 20 hours between your three students, but I'd check with TG to make sure.

My understanding is that the 1,500 words covers a write-up and analysis of both the lesson you observe, and the lesson of yours which has been observed. In this case, I assume that the teacher who observes you will need to feed back in line with the bullet points given in the syllabus, but again, you need to check with TG. Personally I find TG syllabi to be rather vague on points like this!

Thanks for your reply Seer Green. I will contact Trinity as you have suggested, but I think that what you've said has to be right for the peer observation.
