Been lurking for a couple of months and decided to join the fold.

I am one of the many pianists pressed, gently, into playing for Mass. I have been providing back-up for the usual lady who plays for the 11am Sunday service for about 3 years and just recently - in a moment of weakness - took on the Saturday vigil Mass on my own. (No music at all provided for that service for many years.) The organ is 2 manual electronic with pedalboard (12 stops for each manual and 6 for the pedals) and is just slightly older than me (1978 or so). Apparently if it goes wrong again it's unfixable. (Eek!)

It is heartening to see that many people on here have experienced the same sort of things when playing for services that I have found, although I'm still very much still learning to cope!

My musical credentials, for what they are, are Grade 5 piano (an almost merit about 11 years ago about a year before I left school). I scraped through Grade 5 theory a couple of years before that but decided against going further.

I'm looking to broaden my repetoire a bit; CH Trevor's Old English Organ Music books are good for voluntaries and the like at a level I can access although it can take some time to get them to a reasonable standard.

Has anyone here ever attended the summer organ school at St Andrew's University (in Fife, Scotland) ? My going there last summer spurred me on to improve and it was a quite something to be able to play such a variety of instruments. I'm going back again this summer. Been fiddling about with the pedals with the help of Anne Marsden Thomas, slow progress but progress nonetheless. Can't get the ensemble together yet however!

Anyway, that's me. Looking forward to adding my tuppence worth to the interesting discussions here.

Welcome to the forums from a fellow-organist and chorister.

(IMG:style_emoticons/default/welcome.gif) Thanks for coming out of the woodwork ! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/howDoYouDo.gif)

I have used CHT's books on and off for years - have you got any of the Progressive Organist? I think they're still available - graded and quite approachable.

Hello grouse79.

Nice to hear how you are progressing and thanks for the mention of the books you are using. My introduction to playing began with some extremely old and spotted music found on a shelf behind the console, little of which was suitable for a beginner. Thank goodness for hymns to learn on!

Look forward to hearing more from you.

Mel

Firstly, Hello there (IMG:style_emoticons/default/welcome.gif) Hope you have fun here (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

I am thinking of going to the summer school at St. Andrew's but am struggling with the cost at the moment. I'm going to have a word with the Organist at my church for a little funding to help. Would be nice to know someone vaguely before going (IMG:style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif)

Anywho's, enjoy your time here, and maybe I will see you in bonny Scotland!

Take care

A kindred spirit! There are some really good organists on this site, then there are people like us who really try, but make slip ups.

I managed to change registrations during my voluntary this week on an organ without pistons.

And last week I played a hymn using pedals competently for the first time.

Stick with it and you'll get better.

Welcome on board.

Keith (and thanks to everyone for the warm welcome too!)

I considered the course to be my summer holiday! I reckoned it would be the same cost as a fortnight on the beach in Costa Packet (not for me at all) and without the hassle of travelling by plane. I live in Fife and St. Andrews' is only an hour on the bus. I was surprised to find many people attending the course had travelled some distance and had been coming for several years. You can tell who are the regulars but they are a welcoming bunch.

I hope you can make it along.

I can see how I could have benefitted more if I'd had some proper music at that time and had practised it a bit beforehand. As it was my tutor managed to get me to perform the introduction to Stanley's Voluntary No.9 in G Major at the end of course concert (not compulsory I hasten to add!) which I thought wasn't bad after 4 days practice.

Coming better prepared this time!

I haven't heard of the Progressive books but I will bear that in mind next time I am music-buying. Which will be some time off given I've already bought CHT books 1-3, Graded Anthology books 1-3 and another random book but can only play a couple of the pieces competently so far. It must be the musical equivalent of going food shopping when you're hungry - buying more in one go than you can reasonably manage!
