The frying pan noise was what one of my teachers called the noise I was describing, so it must be quite a commom strange noise. I have heard it quite a lot. Some people make it for entire days on courses and never seem to investigate where it might be coming from.

Maybe they like the noise.

In that case why bother with all the problems of trying to play the oboe? A comb and paper would be nicer to listen to.

Does the sound come out of the oboe, or from somewhere else ?

It comes from the reed. It isn't the octave keys.

flobiano is right. It's from the octave boxes (probably 1) not the reed.

It isn't the octave boxes. Different sound, just like fat spitting in a frying pan. Quite loud and I find very annoying.

Beginning to feel the same way about certain member of forum .... (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wacko.gif)

Morton you ask all these questions when you seem to have a very clear idea in your head as to what the problem is. Obviously you've never had these issues yourself as you've said, but it must be troubling for you nonetheless. Why don't you enlighten us? What do you think causes all these crazy non-musical sounds?

No idea. I would have thought that that would have been the job of the teacher to sort out. The worst noise I have ever heard was on oboist who played loud and louder, couldn't get quieter than very loud and sounded just like someone drilling through concrete. I don't know why they played like this, but they had also passed grade 8. I had to go and buy some ear plugs........
