There aren't any events involving eating large amounts of food, so I think i'll just continue being a spectator.

QUOTE That reminds me of the way I can't watch all that javelin and hammer throwing in case they hit the judges! I just don't know how they know when to let go - and supposing they miss the gap in the protective netting - does the weapon rebound on the thrower? I once threw a javelin at my own head, because my arm is bent. It wasn't pleasent, but I lived, with only a bit of fluid. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/ill.gif) |

I just don't know how they know when to let go - and supposing they miss the gap in the protective netting - does the weapon rebound on the thrower? The safety netting is supposed to arrest the flight of the offending object, so it should more or less fall straight to the ground without hurting anyone. I doubt that it would bounce back very far. Regarding the distance between judges and Javelins; the lenses used on television cameras at sporting events have very long focal lengths to get close up to the action, whilst keeping the cameraman at a safe distance and not getting in the way of the competition. This means that perspective is severely compressed, so everything looks much closer together than it really is. In the ground level coverage of the rowing, for instance, the boats looked so close together you would expect the oars to clash, but the overhead shots showed that they were probably 10 or 20 metres metres apart. But is does make it look exiting. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) SB |

The cross country mountain biking looked fun, though maybe not at that pace (IMG:style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif) Would like to try archery too, and perhaps have another go in a canoe (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)

Already got myself down for an archery course and taking up rowing next academic year! Completely not related to the Olympics, they just happened to fall inbetween my decision and September! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/tongue.gif) don't know when I'm actually going to find time to do my uni work and (my neglected) guitar practice between horse riding, archery and particularly rowing! Oh well, I will actually have to become organised instead of lounging around all day like a stereotypical student (IMG:style_emoticons/default/tongue.gif)
