Hello you lot.

I am currently choosing music for a service of Evensong in June during which the Archdeacon is going to bless the new church facilities (kitchen/toilet - the usual 21st cent. additions). I will be leading a moderate SATB choir for the event and require an anthem that will be suitably appropriate for the proceedings. It does not want to be inordinately tricky 'cos we won't have that much rehearsal time. Skip to my Lou aside, can anyone suggest anything that might be appropriate for this kind of event, please? You might have a look at William McKay's 'We wait for thy loving kindness O Lord'.
oops - that should of course be William McKie.

*Memories of a ' New Fire-doors concert' that I put on with a group of friends a few years ago.

Not especially helpful in this context, though, as this was a light-hearted and humorous event, including my re-writing of psalm 122 'I was Mad', and the line in the gloria 'we shan't be holy toast'. *

Ahem. Sorry!

Alternatively, maybe, RVW's O Taste and See. You need a good soprano / treble soloist but I don't somehow think that would be a problem (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

Three 'Dedication' type anthems which spring to mind, and aren't too demanding, are:

W H Harris 'Behold, the tabernacle of God'

Vaughan Williams 'O how amiable are thy dwellings'

Bruckner 'Locus Iste'

Philip

I second that.

Matthew
"Seriously cool dude."
Amiable organ grinder.

Hi Matthew - I thought I was the only amiable organ grinder in North Yorks - where are you? I am near Thirsk and, by coincidence, we are also having a kitchen/toilet facility built at this time. Don't think anyone has yet predicted just when the Archdeacon might be blessing it though.

Thinking about the new toilet how about a setting of:

How lovely is thy dwelling place

The Rawsthorne setting is particularly beautiful.

Vaughan Williams 'O how amiable are thy dwellings'

I would second that. It's a lovely tune and quite straightforward. If you're stuck, I've got a copy somewhere (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

'Except the Lord build the house' by Ian Hare is very accessible.

'Behold, bless ye the Lord' by Francis Jackson is a little more challenging.

'Behold, O God, our defender' by Herbert Howells is extremely challenging.

Given your time scale, perhaps the Bruckner 'Locus iste' is your best bet.

I'd second (or third?) the Bruckner Locus Iste. It was our "standby" piece when I sang in our college choir and the selected anthem proved too challenging to get up to scratch during the Sunday afternoon rehearsal. (I can still sing it by heart! Which suggests our organ scholar was a trifle over-ambitious in choosing repertoire ... (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) ) More seriously, it's beautiful, but perfectly do-able with a moderate choir and shouldn't need much rehearsal.

I had a similar service last year and we did "Pray that Jerusalem may have peace and felicity" by Stanford.

We also sang "If God is building when we build". The words are by Brian Foley and the music is an American melody arranged by John Barnard. I rather liked it, but I'm sure it's not everyone's cup of tea. (It's in the RSCM"Season by Season Book - very expensive, but photocopiable.)

Thank you for all these fine suggestions. I'm rather taken by the Harris option at the moment so might try finding copies of that. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)
