Hello forum funsters.

Please can you help put my mind at rest?

One of my kids has a piano teacher who seems to be getting confused about the 2011-12 piano syllabus. He says that it is only valid until Spring 2012, and has apparently checked with the ABRSM who confirms it.

The ABRSM website and the pieces book both state "All the pieces are valid from 1 January 2011 until 31 December 2012, with a permitted overlap into 2013"

Which interpretation is right? I would have thought the 2011-12 syllabus would last until at least the end of 2012, and that the next set of pieces will be 2013-14. Am I correct?

Thanks

Well look at your 2011-2012 book and it says,
The over lap allows you to do and exam up to Spring 2013.. if you are in the UK.

if you are not in the UK or Ireland ~ You can do them up until December 2013.

The very first paragraph explains the period (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sleep.gif)

If the teacher also teaches Trinity Guildhall, they might be getting confused as the current TG syllabus is 2010-11, which overlaps to the Spring session in 2012. Just a thought ...

Yes, and also just possible (unlikely but possible) that the teacher has deliberately told the pupil that the syllabus expires in Spring in order to 'push' him to getting his grade ready by then.

Thanks all for your coherent responses.

The Trinity confusion might be an explanation (he does teach that syllabus too). Thanks for suggesting it, Lou.

If he really does think that (and some of the explanations people have come up with are quite plausible) exactly what does he think candidates will be playing for exams in the Summer or Autumn of 2012? (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wacko.gif)

He seemed to think there would be a new slew of pieces published in January. I must admit I was a bit confused by it all. Have you ever been in the situation where you know something to be absolutely true, but someone comes along and challenges that belief with such sincerity that you question your own sanity? That is where I found myself when I had the conversation, hence my plea for some "independent" verification via this forum.

I replied to a similar query last week - and I know what you mean - I had to go and look searchingly at the cover of one of the current exam books, just to make sure.
