When did you first start learning scales after taking up the piano?

If you teach, how long do you go before introducing them?

I learnt C Major and G Major scales and arpeggios in my first lesson, hands separately and contrary motion. I already know the key signatures of many scales, and I really enjoy playing them, so my teacher gives me lots to learn (IMG:style_emoticons/default/party1.gif)

I would usually introduce a simple one octave C major hands separately scale within 4 or 5 lessons or so...
It depends on the individual's musical background - whether they play another instrument or do theory etc.

I started learning scales two and a half years ago when I started to learn the piano. I began with the Grade 1 parallel motion scales and introduced the first contrary motion about 2 months later or so (I don't remember). This means in July 2007 i was grappling with how to change fingers for C major (parallel motion) and wondered whether I'd ever learn it fluently. I now knoe all the scales in parallel motion and most of them in contrary motion (both harmonic and melodic) and play then quite smoothly and fluently at crotchet = 84 ... I think I've come a long way in a relatively short time. I have fewer years ahead, though, as I'm 52.

Very early on, in the first few lessons I think. The first scales that I did were contrary motion, the first being c major followed by Dminor which has always been my favourite scale since. I remember it so well because my teacher said that when the children play it, they say it is the one where you go over the bridge, funny cause I remember it like that now and it has always helped to stick in my mind.
