Does anyone know of any recordings (preferably an easily accessable one ie. youtube!) of a piece (preferably flute or sax but any instrument) that is either played by or conducted by the composer. Has to be recorded before 1940!

Have you looked at people like Moyse, Gaubert and Ibert?

Hindemith? There are definitely recordings around of him conducting his own works. Not sure if they'd be on youtube though.

EMI used to do a series of recordings of 'Great British Composers' (or something similar) which had recordings of performances conducted/played by the composers themselves. e.g. Walton.

It should be possible to find (youtube if nowhere else) Gaubert playing some of his stuff - he worked with Nellie Melba performing a lot of flute and voice material (including his own Soir Paien) in some of the first musical recordings ever in 1904 or thereabouts.

Im going to be the oddball one here.

Does it HAVE to be Classical? There are plenty of Jazz tunes in the 30's that were composed and played by the same player (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

Try 'King Oliver' or 'Jelly Roll' Morton.

If that fails you 1930- Cab Calloway, Minnie the Moocher. (Also found in the blues brothers film (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif))

And if this doesn't help then I apologise for wasting space (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wink.gif)

EDIT: Just seen the sax or flute, perhaps then Rudy Wiedolphs- Sax O Phun, as featured in the sax thread?

Another suggestion for a flautist/composer: see if you can find any recordings of William Alwyn playing his own flute pieces. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)
