Abrsm Courses Up North?, Struggling to find a course up here.

Newbie Group: Members Posts: 8 Joined: 5-October 06 Member No.: 7887	I studied on a part-time ABRSM music theory course at a college in Durham last year and managed to get a Grade 3 with distinction. Was hoping to carry on this year and get to Grade 5 but they've cancelled the course - partly due to a re-prioritisation of funding for Further Education. Anybody out there know if there is any such course anywhere else in the North East? I've looked pretty hard with no success but I'm not willing to believe that there isn't one. Failing that, anybody got any advice on other ways of getting up to scratch for the exam? I could probably get by to a certain extent by just working through the books but I'm sure to need some extra help at some point. Cheers, Robert.

Most people study theory privately often one to one with a teacher, that may be the way you have to take forward. Many people can indeed get through the theory by just doing the workbooks, so that's an option if you can manage it. Maybe you could work through it yourself and just have one or two lessons with a teacher and get some papers marked if there are any issues you want to discuss. That way it won't be too expensive. Any specific queries you can post here, in our lovely new theory forum (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif), and people will be happy to help all they can.

I then got a load of past papers and worked through them and a friend of mine (who is a music teacher in a school) marked them for me and gave me feedback. Certainly worked OK for me.
