it needs terrific wind pressure. be careful on the day.
 [but no, that poor instrument has been fully operational for so few years. there's just one ancient recordind of it working properly. the wanamaker organ is nearly as big and beautiful to hear.] one doesn't want a flagging organ on the ab calendar surely. |

Wise words! The biggest one I ever had the pleasure to have at my fingertips was at Liverpool (Anglican) cathedral:
(IMG:http://www.livcathorgan.homestead.com/files/lco/mobile.jpg) My own one is more modest, but brings delight to the gathered faithful twice on a Sunday. |

QUOTE(SirPrancealot @ Oct 4 2005, 05:18 PM) special as in, having "special educational needs" lol The Atlantic City organ is the biggest in the world, if not fully functional (it fell into disrepair sadly, and of course the restoration costs are astronomical).. I have a CD, recorded to raise funds, which includes such amusing tracks as "Blower No.2 starting up" lol :P If you're the blind bit interested, the website for the organ is here! |

100 inches of wind is the amount of pressure used to play a particular set of pipes. Wind pressures are measured in inches of water, 100 in. pressure meaning that the wind is capable of supporting a column of water 8 feet 4 inches high!
The more pressure, the louder the pipe, basically. Liverpool Anglican Cathedral has some stops on 50 inches of wind which are ear-splittingly loud and probably the loudest stops in the world, certainly in the UK. You can imagine what 100 inches might be like if they ever restore that part of the organ in Atlantic City :) |
