Express 3/4x3(to the power of three) in the form axb (to the power of b), where a and b are rational constants.

(IMG:style_emoticons/default/blink.gif) (IMG:style_emoticons/default/blink.gif) (IMG:style_emoticons/default/blink.gif)

So you mean the fraction (3/4), all cubed?

Rational constants are merely whole numbers or fractions, in which case you wouldn't have to change a thing in this example.

No, sorry, 3 divided by 4x to the power of 3, just realised that wasn't terribly clear!

Using the symbol ^ to represent 'to the power of':

That would be (3^3)/(4^3) multiplied by (1/x)^3

(3^3)/(4^3) = 27/64 and since (1/x) = x^(-1), the (1/x)^3 = x^(-3)

so your final answer would be: 27/64 x^(-3)

The fraction 27/64 is rational, and so is the (-3)

That's quite alright. Don't think that you're alone either in finding the initial jump from GCSE to GCE a tough one at times. Quite a few questions came my way during Private Study this week, from Y12 and Y13 alike!

I don't care much for Statistics, haven't done Decision Maths and can get by with Mechanics, but Pure Maths is fine - C1,2,3,4, FP1,2,3 - so ask away if you get stuck. The only limitation will be finding a way around notation on this forum! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

Thanks (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) decision maths seems pretty useless to be honest-it's effectively doing something that can be done by common sense in the seemingly most complicated manner possible!! Ah well, it must be done, and thanks again (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

Grrr panicking about tomorrow.
I have a lesson but I was supposed to get down the the bottom of the 3rd page on two of my piece's which I've not been able to do. I personally feel I've made progress as it took so long to get the last few bars learnt that I have learnt that it would take me another few weeks to get where I'm supposed to be just now.
Just hope I can get tomorrow night over with. My concentration seems to be very lacking just now (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sad.gif)

Sorry to hear this, but I can't help feeling that it's not life that stinks, but death. We try to live as though life will go on for ever, even though we know it can't. Then we feel somehow shortchanged when people don't live for what we consider to be the right length of time. The truth is that life is a gift, not a right, and we should make the most of every day, as it could be our last.

I hope you'll be able to comfort your ill friend and that she'll cope with the cancer. It's a nasty thing to have hanging over you (my brother is in the same position), and I think you just have to stay as positive as possible.

QUOTE(kerioboe @ Sep 23 2010, 08:48 PM) *

I start teaching on Monday. I (like every other member of staff) have a timetable with no rooms on it and have been told to consider it provisional until I have been given rooms.

The students were supposed to enrol today but the trams were on strike making the university virtually inaccessible. The students were supposed to fill in a paper form which will then be typed into the computer system and the students can then log in and print out an individual timetable. The timetable will only be available to download when their form has been put into the system and the administrative staff don't work on Friday afternoons (and we are talking about around 800 students). We have been told that those students who enrolled on Thursday should have their timetables by midday on Monday at the latest (what about morning classes? And what about those who didn't enrol today because they couldn't get to the university?)

Students have to download documents from the website but the documents are listed under the teacher's name and they aren't told the teacher's name before the first class to stop them swapping classes when they see who they've got so they can't download anything before the first lesson and we have no photocopy budget.

I decided I would do something on powerpoint instead of using a paper document and tried to book a video-projector but you can only do that if you say which room you'll be in ...

Next episode...

I went into the University today (a mere two hour commute each way...) to discover that the rooms still hadn't been timetabled and the students hadn't all been assigned to a group so the only lessons taking place would be whole year lectures. My five hours of lessons were all cancelled... So it didn't matter that I didn't have either photocopies or a video-projector...

I have four hours teaching tomorrow. We were told to look on the University website in the afternoon or evening and group timetables would be put up so that we could find our different groups and work out which rooms we were in. I have been checking every hour since about 5.00pm and there has been nothing. I just went to check again and the website has crashed (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wacko.gif)

I can't not go because the rooms might have been sorted out. But it's such a long journey (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sad.gif)
