Hello. This is the situation..., (because i can't say it in a question so i'll tell u the situation)

i want to create a song with a certain mood, (like happy, sad, etc).

so i wanted to know some chords or chord sequences which sound sad, happy, etc.
thanks.

Happy songs usually have major chords. For example:

D major: D, F#, A
F major: F, A, C
Bb major: Bb, D, F

Sad songs usually have minor chords. For example:

D minor: D, F, A
G minor: G, Bb, D
B minor: B, D, F#

Hope that helps a little.

I usually use
I, IV, V, I for a perfect cadence

I like to use loud chords at the bottom of the piano if I'm, like, trying to imitate an elephant.
If I want fluttering butterflies I sometimes use tinkling scales at the very top of the piano, often using a plagal cadence - I, IV, I.

If you want scary sounds you'll want lots of minor 2nds i.e. semitone clashes - like in Psycho. Alternatively you could make scary noises into a recording device and play along with it on your piano.

Does anyone actually know the notes that are used for the famous Psycho theme?

(very high up the piano, in the last octave) cluster chord. fabc or something.play cluster chord harshly with every c in the bass

I'm sure there's a piece that asks the pianist to play a load of notes with their ARM! Ben Grosvenor did this in the YMOTY! I can't remember what it's called or who by though (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sad.gif)

There's a very cool piece in Spectrum 3 where you have to rest two very heavy books on some keys at the bottom of the piano so that they sustain. It's so much fun! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)

There's also one in Spectrum 1 I think it is, called Tsunami, which calls for hand and arm clusters if I remember rightly (I'm in bed just now and can't be bothered to go down and switch all the lights on to have a look!!!!)

i think u just need to get general experience in the kind of songs u want to write. so u can see how other ppl have done it - u don't have to copy but u start to learn how its done.

it isn't always major or minor but the play of keychanges betw'n them, the suspensions u can introduce, chord layout, tempo, everything. theres so much music out there its difficult but everytime u hear something that strikes u, make a note and classify it.
like i loved the baleful sound of chopin's prelude 20 [i think thats the one i mean, in c minor] because of the use of the chromatic [flat]-ii [maj] [not often used in root position] but becomes a pivot chord for getting into the submediant of a-flat. i couldnt leave it alone until i found out how that string of modulations worked - clever in a minor key.

in the end its as sbhoa says, let ur ears guide u, try things out.

good luck.

Don't know about Ben Grosvenor, but I played percussion/chordavox in our musical Sweet Charity last year and in one of the lines ("...and a boat explodes...") the instructions in my part are: Pull out all the stops. RH + LH arms play as many notes as you can. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/ohmy.gif) Great fun! The violins jumped the first time we rehearsed!!

The G2 piece Rosamund's March involves lots of note clusters to be hit with the fist.
