On Radio 3 - NOW! - Chopin's Second Piano Concerto String Quartet Version! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/ohmy.gif) (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

The piano's still there - the string quartet takes the part of the orchestra. Do you suppose that Chopin himself performed this in some Parisian parlour, just before tea and cakes were distributed on a Sunday afternoon? (IMG:style_emoticons/default/unsure.gif)

I went to a concert where Martin Roscoe played Chopin's first piano concerto with string quartet in march.

Whilst I found the string quartet version surprisingly acceptable, the two disappoiintments were the final few bars, where the quartet sounded limp rather than triumphant and the horn fanfare that heralds the change of pace in the last section, where the string replacement was ... well, not in the same league. Liszt's Transcendental Studies played by Freddy Kempf.

I was thinking of buying the sheet music when I'm next in Blackwell's, but listening to them performed here, it might be a waste of money at present! There's a long road ahead if I want to learn these pieces, although Harmonies du Soir might be manageable.

Incidentally, the year that Freddy won Young Musician of the Year he performed Balakirev's Islamey in the second round! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/ohmy.gif)

Complete works for solo piano by Igor Stravinsky. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

His early piano sonata (1924) has a very Bachian feel to it.

I play his Tango and have tried his Circus Polka (his own transcription from the orchestral original), although it's not easy!
