Ugh, I cannot stand Wayne Marshall, and have heard him live two or three times. He plays a lot of stuff too fast. He murders Messaien's 'Transports de Joie' from 'Ascension' and Alain's 'Litanies'

For Bach I like Ian Bowyer or Ton Koopman, for Messaien Jennifer Bate, but Simob Preston is a good allrounder.

Yes, I find KEVIN Bowyer's Bach performances (on the Nimbus CD label) very persuasive, as are Ton Koopman's for Teldec. I particularly enjoy Koopman's ornamentations.

My favourite organist is Olivier Latry. I attended a recital by him a couple of weeks ag. He played for one and a half hours without using any music. Famtastic!
He is organist at Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris, and the recital I attended recently was in the parish church of Melzo in Milan Italy. The programme consisted of Bach, Mozart, Alain, Durufle and his own stuff.

GC reckons you mean to say he played "without using any score" It's a contradiction in terms to say that one can play without music.

Erm... Logic-ly?

Based on who I've heard play live. My favourite Organist is Graham Cummings, University Organist at the University of Huddersfield. But I don't know of any recordings.

I just remember really enjoying his recitals when I was an undergraduate, they were really sensitive and musical.

I too dislike Wayne Marshall. not to keen on his playing technique (he can play things a bit faster than necessary) and i hear he is a bit 'full of himself' I used to work at Bridgewater Hall in Manchester (where he is resident organist with the Halle) and a few of my colleagues claimed to have had an earful from him over small pathetic things.
Not heard Kevin Bowyer actually playing the organ, but I dont like what he has written. I've just bought a book of scores he wrote in a Gregorian style. Well, the cover says Gregorian, the notes on the page say 20th Century to me (IMG:style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif)
Simon Preston seems to have done everything very well (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) I do like the stuff of his that i've heard, especially Elgars Imperial March

I cannot stand Wayne Marshall! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/ph34r.gif) He plays many things far too fast in order to show off. I remember he once played Messaiens 'Transports de Joie' from 'Ascension' at the Last night of the Proms and murdered it!
I also heard him play live at Leeds Town Hall and he was just as bad.

Im not very keen either on John Scott Whiteley (I have a DVD of the 20th Cent Bach) or John Scott in St Pauls.
My favourite for Bach is Kevin Bowyer or Ton Koopman.
But my favourite CD in 'The French Connection' played in Paisley Abbey by George McPhee.
Ian Treacy at Liverpool is pretty good too.

I heard him in concert with Natalie Clein (cellist) last week. They played some pieces together and he also did a couple of solos. He's great on the organ and the piano.
