I really WANT to be able to play this one. I think it's the George Winston arrangement, which I first heard around 15 years ago. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-nvrGWHij10...feature=related (I have the sheet music and I try every so often...and FAIL). That link doesn't work. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sad.gif) T-r-y-i-n-g again.... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-nvrGWHij10...feature=related |

Absolutely love this piece, despite some dodgy notes sung by me when we sang it!!! I love how it starts off simple and then builds up until it's just like (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wub.gif). Arranged for voices, it's amazing, but only when the sopranos are secure enough with the F - if done right, it's chillingly good, if not, well...... (IMG:style_emoticons/default/blink.gif)

I haven't voted as I neither love nor hate it. It's the kind of well known piece my piano pupils sometimes ask to play and I usually give them a version that is OK for their particular level.

More of a period performance. For those who really are well and truly sick of it: DON'T Click on the Link!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JvNQLJ1_HQ0 Love it or hate it, I have known the serious thrash metal lot to lend their ears upon hearing it. I can't ever recall them doing that to Chopin, Mozart or even Bach! |

Not sure why this old thread has just been revived but it got me thinking. I'm going to refuse to say I hate it as I don't think that I could really say that I hate any piece of music. I mean, were I stuck on a desert island with nothing but a CD of Pachelbel's Canon I'd probably listen to it all the time. Were I stuck on a desert island with nothing but a CD of Xenakis' greatest hits I'd probably listen to that all the time too. Somerset Maugham said that he would rather read a train timetable than read nothing at all. I agree with him on that, and I'd extend it to music. I don't love the train timetable, but nor do I hate it, for who knows when I may find myself having to read it.
That said, I am puzzled by the popularity of this piece. It fails to engage me in the way in which, say, the Berg violin concerto engages me. Never before had I realised what a staple it was of weddings. When eventually I get round to marrying the future Mrs Quinn (or Pani Quinn) I think the only music we're having is Chopin's Polonaise in A-flat major, Op. 53. |

Someone will have responded to the poll which will cause the thread to appear in 'recent'. |
